Divine Sophia and the Clear Recital Part III

Columbadi/17 Flora

O, Agia Grace/ Agia Sushuri, be with us.

from the Mother Mary Oracle card deck by Alana Fairchild.

Let us call upon the Holy Sophia, the supernal mother of our souls, and celestial bride of our spirits: Daughter of Infinite Light, born of enlightened love; merciful and compassionate, embodiment of perfect wisdom; begotten in Eternity, beyond Time and Space, With what words shall we praise Thee, or with what thoughts comprehend Thy majesty? Utterance must profane Thee; silence itself can bear witness to Thee. How shall we extoll Thee? In what shall we shadow forth Thy great glory among us? From the Collect of the Gnostic liturgy for Sept. 8th. (A)

Filanism teaches that Living Stream Goddesses may be used as Forms or Images for Dea. For Janites, though we are not Gnostic, the Divine Sophia is our Living Stream Form for Dea. Many regard Her as Mother, Daughter and Holy Soul. Others know Her as the Holy Spirit. Janites understand Her to be Mother, Daughter and Absolute Deity (the Monas).

In the Clear Recital (our scriptures), the authors of the Mythos of Creation and the Mythos of the Divine Maid (Holy Daughter) separate the Divine Feminine from the complete myth which also includes the masculine. The  Mythos of Creation is inspired, in part, by the Pelegasian Myth of Eurynome. It is important to keep in mind  that the Myth of Eurynome includes the masculine side of the story. The author of our scriptures focused on the role of the Divine Feminine.

In the Passion of the Holy Daughter, which was based, in part, upon the myth of Inanna, this myth  also incorporates the masculine, including Inanna’s husband, Dumuzid. In Filianism, the Seven Planetary Powers, who, in the Eurynome myth, are both female and male Titans, the female Titans  are separated from their male counterparts as forms  for the Janae. In this, the authors of the Mythos were focusing on the Story of the Divine Feminine. And so, we do the same for the Divine Sophia as far as Gnosticism is concerned. We focus on the Role of the Divine Feminine.

As we know, the  Divine Sophia was demoted from Her original position as Gnostic Christianity took hold. And, unfortunately, even in the most favorable of Gnostic texts, those texts which do not hold the Divine Sophia as fallen or trapped,  Daughter Sophia is blamed for the Fall one way or the other. Syrian Gnosis is one of the few exceptions where there is no idea of a fallen or trapped Sophia.

Despite this, there are many correlations between the Mythos of Sophia and the Mythos as found in our scriptures, the Clear Recital.  Today, we will begin where we left off in Part II, which was the Nativity story of the Three Princesses as found in Chapter II of the Mythos of the Divine Maid/Holy Daughter, verses 20-30.

From the Nativity Story, we  move on to the Holy Daughter leaving the Light of Her Mother and taking on Fate (Chapter III, verses 10-22). Filia Sophia does something similar. She must separate Herself from Her Mother so that She may begin Her Descent. She, also, must take on Fate. She, also, must be stripped of Her Glory.

As Caitlin Matthews so beautifully states in her book, Sophia, Goddess of Wisdom , Bride of God, “Sophia evicts Herself from the Fullness of Heaven (Pleroma) and wanders homeless across the world, only to lodge in the hearts of Her faithful children  who still remember their Divine Mistress. She puts off Her Glory and covers Herself with a Veil”. (This is one of many reasons we veil during formal prayer, the RoS and the liturgy, because our Goddesses, the Celestial Mary and Sophia, are veiled. The veil is highly symbolic).

Interestingly enough, Chapter IV,in the Mythos of the Divine Maid contains a story which I call the Temptation of the Holy Daughter which is highly  reminiscent of the Temptation of Christ in the Desert. Like the Christ, the Holy Daughter remains faithful to Her mission. (The Madrians referred to Jesus, in their Coming Age magazine, as Sai Jesus (Janites use the Greek, Agia), because they considered him to be an hera. 1) Similar to the Holy Daughter, in the various Sophian texts, Daughter Sophia goes through Her Own drama before Her Descent through the Seven Realms.

Before we begin the Descent of the Holy Daughter, I would like to quote something scholar Caitlin Matthews has so eloquently stated, something that I have often spoken of myself (not so eloquently) and something that has been felt by many  women for generation upon generation. Again, from Sophia, Goddess of Wisdom, Bride of God “ This account of the Fall cannot help but be read as patronizing by any woman. Many more extreme fulminations against the sin of Eve abound, all based squarely on biblical precedent. Western women, both Christian and Jewish, have lived in their shadow for many hundreds of years. Eve’s punishment for her desire for knowledge is to suffer in her sexuality by bearing children. Eve’s punishment for her desire for knowledge is to suffer in her sexuality by bearing children (I assume she means in great pain which is what the bible said). Sophia’s punishment for presuming to either create by Herself or to see Her origins is to bear a child that will trap her vital power in matter. By extension, all women still suffer in their sexuality as a result of this myth’s social influence. And, indeed, we have suffered in many other ways, too. Especially when we have been considered to be spiritually inferior.

So, to the Gnostics, the Father could create by Himself, but the Female could not.

There are several versions of what happens to Sophia. In On the Origin of the World, Sophia is Saviouress and Her Daughter breathes the Life-Spirit into Adam. But, in other Myths, She falls through the Seven Realms or Seven Density-Vibrations and becomes trapped as the World Soul.

However, if we look to the Mythos of the Kabbalistic Shekinah, keeping in mind that the Shekinah and Sophia are One, the Descent is voluntary, out of love for humanity. Likewise, the Syrian Gnostics, were said to have taught: There is here, as yet, no thought of a fall, properly so called, as in the Valentinian system. The power which has thus overflowed leftwards, makes a voluntary descent into the lower waters, confiding in its possession of the spark of true light. It is, moreover, evident that though mythologically distinguished from the humectatio luminis (Greek: ikmas phōtos, ἰκμὰς φωτός), the Sophia is yet, really nothing else but the light-spark coming from above, entering this lower material world, and becoming here the source of all formation, and of both the higher and the lower life. She swims over the waters, and sets their hitherto immoveable mass in motion, driving them into the abyss, and taking to herself a bodily form from the hylē. She compasses about, and is laden with material every kind of weight and substance, so that, but for the essential spark of light, she would be sunk and lost in the material. Bound to the body which she has assumed and weighed down thereby, she seeks in vain to make her escape from the lower waters, and hasten upwards to rejoin her heavenly mother. Not succeeding in this endeavour, she seeks to preserve, at least, her light-spark from being injured by the lower elements, raises herself by its power to the realm of the upper region, and these spreading out herself she forms out of her own bodily part, the dividing wall of the visible firmament, but still retains the aquatilis corporis typus. Finally seized with a longing for the higher light, she finds, at length, in herself, the power to raise herself even above the heaven of her own forming, and to fully lay aside her corporeity. The body thus abandoned is called “Woman from Woman.” (4)

We can see from this that not only did the Descent cause Her suffering, but, as with the Holy Daughter in the Clear Recital, the Descent of Sophia was absolutely necessary for Creation.

Again, quoting Caitlin Matthews in Sophia, Bride of God,  ” This image is one of Sophia, no longer the veiled bride awaiting Her bridegroom, but the glorious Virgin of Light Who descends willingly from Her place apart to partake of the drama of life’s restoration to the light.

The Descent of Sophia is compared to that of Ishtar/Inanna. Ishtar’s symbol is the 8 pointed star. Sophia is the Mistress of the Ogdoad that is, the Seven Planetary Spheres and the Eighth realm of the fixed stars or the Seven Heavens and the region above them. The eighth region is considered to be superior to the Seven Realms. Like Inanna, who was stripped of her mes (mays,) the divine rules which are symbolized by her regalia, (crown, two necklets, breastplate, ring, measuring rod and line and her royal robe), Sophia also goes through the stripping of the Seven Levels. The mystical number seven, symbolic of the Sophian mysteries, are to be found in Her descent of the Seven Levels, Her Seven Pillars, Her Seven Sorrows, Her Seven Archangels Who came from Her Light, and Her Seven Female Aeons, not to mention the Seven Gifts and the Seven Spirits.

As with the Passion Mythos of the Holy Daughter, (Chapter V, verses 1-17). the Descent through the Seven vibratory-densities was excruciating to Daughter Sophia. We learn, from Tau Malachi: ” On a metaphysical level there is something more within this story, however, for the descent of the Bride (Sophia) into exile and bondage is her crucifixion upon the cross of the world; she goes down into the ignorance and darkness to gather holy sparks into herself, so that arising from the darkness she might carry those sparks in ascent with her. Thus, she is acting as the Savioress….” (3) (Here he is referring to the Divine Sparks of Sophia which reside in our souls).

She comes to earth to be with us, her children, to be our consolation and the inspiration of our love. By this image we have the promise that we are not left alone in our darkness but have Sophia’s abiding presence in our lives. (from:  http://www.gnosis.org/ecclesia/cal_mandala.htm )

  1. As Race MoChridhe notes: Especially in light of their assertion that the distinction between men and maids no longer matters at the level of the contemplative who has achieved union with our Mother (found in the “A Man’s Place” article in TCA 15 p. 6) prayer to Jesus–not as God or as a Divine “Son of God” but as an intercessory saint on a level with Sai Suanti or Hera Pellegrina–would in theory be entirely orthodox. (Madria Olga continued to attend mass for the 30 years she was a Madrian priestess. It is said that she did so in order to worship Mary. Here, we see how the Madrians might have understood Agia Jesus as an hera.)

Ourania Aphrodite-Living Stream/the Church of Aphrodite

Stelladi/15 Flora

O, Agia Sage, be with us.

In our religion, we believe in using only Living Stream Images or Forms for Dea. For Janites, it is the Divine Sophia. Using only Living Stream images is one of the things which separates us from Neo-Paganism/Wicca. It does not matter what religion They are from, They simply have to be Living Stream. These Goddess Forms have had an unbroken line of devotion up until recent times. Examples of Living Stream Goddesses are the Celestial Mary, Sophia, Tara, Amaterasu, the Hindu Goddesses, Brighid, Quan Yin, etc. Now, we must consider Ourania Aphrodite.

Image result for image of ourania aphrodite

Aphrodite Urania (Ancient GreekΟὐρανία) was an epithet of the Greek goddess Aphrodite, signifying “heavenly” or “spiritual”, to distinguish her from her more earthly aspect of Aphrodite Pandemos, “Aphrodite for all the people”.[2] The two were used (mostly in literature) to differentiate the more “celestial” love of body and soul from purely physical lust. (1) She was known as the Queen of the Heavens.

It was sometime last year when I saw a documentary (it might have been on youtube) about a group of priestesses in Greece who were conducting a worship service in honor of Aphrodite. They were not Wiccan or neo-Pagan. I don’t know if they were Hellenists or just goddess worshipers.  I was quite taken with the level of respect and depth of true devotion they were exhibiting both during the ritual and afterwards, when they were being interviewed. They spoke about Aphrodite with the same awe and reverence we use when we speak about Dea. It was very different than other goddess rituals that I have witnessed. It left a deep impression on me.

Not too long ago, I learned of an underground priestess Order who have been worshiping Venus (Roman name for Aphrodite) going back to ancient times. I hope that someday soon, they will let the world know about them. If this is true, then this means that Aphrodite/Venus is a Living Stream goddess.

Just this week, we have learned of the former Church of Aphrodite which was begun by a personal physician to the Tzar and his family during the early 20th century.

Image result for ekaterinburg assassination of russian imperial family Imperial Romanov Family

Dr. Gleb Botkin left Russia to come to the U. S. shortly after the terrible tragedy in Ekaterinburg, where the entire family of Tsar Nicolas was executed. (The family has since been canonized in the Russian Orthodox Church.)

He incorporated his Church of Aphrodite in New York in 1939 (not sure when it was actually founded) and it lasted until his death in 1969. What is most amazing about his legalized Church, was that it was monotheastic. This was long before neo-Paganism and the modern goddess movements began to gain a foothold in the U. S., and certainly long before the modern Madrian/Filianic movement.

The Church was more Goddess-monotheistic than polytheistic:

Aphrodite, the flower-faced, the sweetly smiling, the laughter-loving Goddess of Love and Beauty, is the self-existent, eternal and Only Supreme Deity, Creator and Mother of the cosmos, the Universal Cause, the Universal Mind, the Source of all life and all positive and creative forces of nature, the Fountainhead of all happiness and joy.

The only independent and inexhaustible Generator of Love – its Prime Source and Ultimate Object – is the Supreme Deity and Creator. Indeed, the Supreme Deity is also the Creator precisely in virtue of being the Generator of the basic creative energy in the cosmos. Parenthetically, that fact is in itself a sufficient reason…for visualizing the Supreme Deity, not as a Father God, but the Mother Goddess. Indeed, the process of an energy’s emanation from its source is an organic one. Hence, the cosmos must be regarded as the fruit of the Divine Organism – not an arbitrarily created artifact; and needless to say, it is only a feminine organism which is capable of bearing fruit…

The fact that the Goddess is the Prime Source and Ultimate Object of all love means that love for any object represents a form of communion with the Goddess, while any creative activity impelled by love represents a form of worship of the Goddess. (3)
Dr. Botkin was regarded as a Pagan. Today, he would be clearly Deanic.

Blog: Priestess of Holy Wisdom & Sophian Filianism & Demotion Myths

15 Columbina/April 4

Stelladi/Wed

O, Madria Sage, Jana of Intelligence, Intuition and Wisdom, be with us.

I would like to draw your attention to the following About Page: priestessofholywisdom.wordpress.com/about

This is an excellent introduction to what the authoress calls Sophian Filianism.

I’m not sure the About Page is listed on her menu, and so we will be including this particular link in our links section.

The Janites might also refer to themselves as Sophian Deanic as the Janite Tradition, like the Kyrian Tradition before it, was created to honor Sophia as Our Mother/Daughter God.

I am in complete agreement with this well written article and I, too, have come to understand the Barbelo, ( though some Gnostics tried to claim She was either male or androgynous), as being Absolute Deity. She is understood by many scholars to be the Higher Avatar or Form of Sophia.

Both Monad and Monogenes, terms used by Gnostics to describe the Absolute, were originally feminine nouns. This is why Janites often refer to the Absolute, the Great Mother, as the Monas, the original form of Monad.

The teachings on this priestessofholywisdom website are perfectly compatible with Janite Tradition. Zoe is an acceptable Form for the Holy Daughter and the authoress does a fine job of tying in the story of Zoe-Eve with the idea of the Filianic Sacrifice. In fact, there is a connection here, with our communion rite, something which we received from the Madrians and known to our priestesses both past and present, if they could but make the connection.

It must be remembered that like Christianity, Gnosticism is more of an umbrella term for different schools of Gnostic thought which oftentimes resulted in the variations of the myths.

In Sophian Filianism, we are merely restoring Sophia to Her original Glory because only in Gnosticism is there the idea that the Divine Daughter of Wisdom could possibly commit an huge error by choosing to create by Herself and so, just as the powerful Roman Church blamed a human female, Eve, for the Fall of Creation, so Gnostic Christians blamed the Divine Female for the Fall of Creation and through their myths, raped Eve.

This is why I left Gnosticism. I had enough of the extremely misogynistic, evil teachings of Catholic (I am a former Catholic) and Gnostic Christianity where females are blamed for the plight of humanity and creation and thereby needing a male saviour. In Gnosticism, the Divine Sophia, Who is trapped here, is forced to beg, through singing many songs of repentance, for Her male savior to allow Her to re-ascend through the realms .

I have lived the results of these false teachings as have my fore-mothers before me. It results in women becoming second class citizens in their churches, taking part of the blame for Eve’s ‘fault’ and, at times, being considered spiritually inferior but saved through childbirth or obeying their husbands. This might sound farfetched, but it was the experience of females in my former church for almost two millennia until just a few short decades ago. It has yet to be completely eradicated.

Let me make clear that here, I am not speaking about women becoming priests in the Catholic Church. I am a firm believer that males should liturgically channel the Divine Masculine while females should liturgically channel the Divine Feminine.

I feel that those who have resurrected the Gnostic Churches since the finding of the Nag Hamadi texts should stop and think about what they are doing when they perpetuate an ancient MYTH which, perhaps without meaning to, demonizes, degrades, traps, rapes and humiliates the Divine Female. Even if they consider Her to be the lowest Aeon, She is still Divine and on the same level as Christ, the Logos, Her Twin. Imagine if all of this stuff was taught about the Christ Aeon!

And what is even worse, this time, it is not just an human female, the mother of all humanity on Earth, but the Divine Female, the Mother of the Cosmos, Wisdom, Herself, Who is degraded blamed, ultimately forcing the Divine Daughter of Wisdom to beg for mercy from Her male consort.

If modern Gnostics can veer away from the Gnostic belief that manifest creation is evil, why can’t they realize that the demotion of the Divine Feminine is just as erroneous. It is clear that some Gnostic Christians re-wrote some of the pre-Christian texts to suit their inherent bias.

Why don’t they restore Her to Her original place and reveal Her to be the Sacrificial Heroine that Kabbalists see in Her counterpart, the Shekinah? (www.universalkabbalah.net/Shekinah. See especially the second paragraph under Shekinah and Creation.)

In Gnostic Christianity….it is ok for a Male to create without His Female consort, but, apparently, a Female may not do the same without wreaking havoc, destruction and causing immense suffering.

We do not accept such teachings. And certainly, the Russian mystics did not and do not see Sophia that way nor do those Christians, both ancient and modern, who understood Her to be the Holy Spirit, Whom, in Gnostic texts, Jesus referred to as his MOTHER.

And so, in summary, the male theologians took our human mother and blamed her for the Fall and all the evils and sickness of creation.

They blamed her for ‘enticing her husband to sin’. And the Roman Church went so far as to say we all had to inherit this sin….that we are literally born with the stain of Original Sin on our souls which is why Jesus had to be tortured and killed so that the stain could be removed through baptism and the gates of heaven be re-opened.

So, in other words, ultimately, according to mainstream Christianity, the male savior had to come because the female Eve sinned against the male god and caused her husband to sin. So, they demoted and demonized our human mother, the mother of all the Living.

The Gnostics did the exact same thing to Our Divine Mother, Sophia,  Divine Wisdom, the Mother of all the Cosmos, Who as part of the Godhead, cannot make such an error.

And, they went so far as to have our human mother, who had the Light of the Daughter, Zoe-Sophia within Her, raped and defiled! (Though, I believe the Light of Zoe first departed from Eve)!

Let us remember that these were myths that  were  written by men; they were not historical  events. We do not have to accept parts of myths that defile and demote the female whether human or divine. This is what gives religious zealots, both past and present, the idea that it is ok to treat women as being spiritually inferior.

At the same time that the Gnostics defamed, demoted, trapped, raped and defiled the Divine Feminine, the Roman Church, took Her away completely by making Her into a male with the erroneous teaching that both the Logos and His Twin, Wisdom, incarnated forever as the male, Jesus and further  teaching that the Holy Spirit is male, thereby  leaving us with only the human mother, Mary, who must never be considered divine, because only the male can be considered divine.

(And I don’t want to hear any excuses as to how the Church really believes that God is either genderless  or that God is both male and female. The Traditional Catholic Church clearly taught that God was male and explained why.)  And this human mother, Mary, was dependent upon her son for her immaculate conception. (There is an excruciating attempt to explain this in Catholic theology where this was preordained for her through the future merits of her son.)

So, again, thanks to male theology, we have yet another female who, though this time is not blamed for the Fall, she is still dependent on a male saviour and cannot be divine. So, we can have a divine Father, but not a Divine Mother.

Thankfully, there is a school of Russian thought where Mary is considered to be the incarnation of Sophia.

I say that there is no place in the 21st century for these antiquated, misogynist in the extreme, harmful teachings. And I am not making these statements as a radical feminist. Quite the contrary, I am a traditional, conservative woman. But, I am a woman who has the Divine Spark of my Mother residing within the temple of my soul and it is for Her, for Our Very and True Mother, that I fight.

I fight for Her right to be recognized as being Divine in Her Own Right; Who is not dependent on a male consort or a male saviour in order to be part of the Godhead.

She is Supreme. She gave birth to the Male. She is God in Her Own right. She did not sin, or error, or cause the Fall. She did not get raped or create the half aborted demi-urge or half-maker. She is not trapped here against Her Divine and Powerful Will. Nor is She the Ruler of the Seven Hebdomas who are evil archonic planetary powers. This is an inversion of the truth.

Why must we accept these awful myths that were written by men, not women…..  thousands of years ago? Especially when we have the evidence that they changed some of the original texts to suit their narrative? (More on that to come in the near future.)

This is why, decades ago, I sought to somehow become a valid priestess and form an Order through which She could be honored and worshiped as God in Her Own Right, just as did the Collyridians of old. (Evidence has recently come to light that the Collyridians were more far-reaching than previously thought and may have lasted for centuries).

This is also why Janites believe that the worship of the Mother must be kept separate from Divine Masculine worship because, as many of us have experienced, She is all too quickly subsumed by the Divine Masculine. The painting of Sophia and Jehovah in the Sistine Chapel is a clear illustration of this experience. Jehovah is huge, mighty, strong while Sophia is tiny and shadowed beneath his arm.

Through the blessing of the Deanic/Filianic religion, whose roots may go back further than I initially thought, we have the tools to take Sophia, Our Divine Mother God, out of the shadow of the Divine Masculine and restore Her to Her proper place.

We can free Her from being raped, demoted, trapped, demonized, humiliated and restore for Her, the recognition of Her Glory, Her Divinity…..

Her very GODHOOD.

Primordial Pre Patriarchal Sophia and Creatrix Eurynome

28 Brighid / Feb. 19

Lunadi or Moon Day. (Monday).

Day of Madria Candra.

To our friends and devotees,

Sorry, this article may be rather clumsily constructed, as I am still so excited by this news.

It is in 2 sections. Section 1 is the most recent find by ArchMadria Candra Sophia. The connection between primordial pre-patriarchal Sophia and prehistoric Eurynome (pronounced euren AW mee) meaning “Wide-Ruling” and why this is so significant to the Déanic Order of Kore Di-Jana a.k.a. Janites.

Section 2 is background information for those unfamiliar with the Pelasgian first nation peoples of the Aegean Sea region in Europe and the Creation Myth of Eurynome which includes the Seven Planetary Powers. This is yet another patriarchal demotion of the Divine Feminine. Credited with thanks to ArchMatrona Ghrian of the Lucienne tradition

Pre Patriarchal Sophia as a True Universal Goddess

Unknown Artist. Sophia is the central pivot of creation and represents the feminine aspect in all things.

Sophia is a pre-Greek goddess, and also a Christian goddess, which goes to show that She is truly a Universal Goddess. Bridgid, Herself, is both a Pagan Goddess and one of the most important Christian saints in the Catholic Church.
A Church, that we must admit, is worldwide. So She, who was once a Primary Celtic goddess, became a worldwide saint.
Therefore, Bridgid is also a True Universal Goddess because She, like Sophia, is revered in both the Pagan and Christian worlds.
In my personal opinion, perhaps this renders Bridgid and Sophia as two of the most Universal Forms of Dea on Earth. [1]

Déanic Myth of Creation

We view the Myth of Creation and the Myth of the Divine Maid/ Daughter as sacred, inspiring stories which use various sources to speak of a perennial Mystery. The scriptures are based, in part, upon the Pelasgian Mythos, the Myth of Persephone and Demeter, the Christian Mysteries and the Passion mythos of Inanna, although I think most would agree that the goddess of sex and war is not a suitable Image/Form for the Most Pure Holy Daughter. These mythos were never meant to be taken literally. Rather, they are human stories which speak of a Sacred Cosmic Drama which takes place out of time. [2]

Pre Patriarchal Sophia as Celestial Mother Genetrix of ALL & Soteria Holy Daughter

This is such a revelatory article, uncovering “the original blueprint” / pre-patriarchal Sophia similarities to Eurynome. Pre-patriarchal Sophia who is the basis of the Déanic Order of Kore Di-Jana a.k.a. Janites as Holy Daughter. She is also confirmed in a pagan context as Eurynome – Celestial Mother Genetrix of ALL creation. [3a] Including the Seven Great Janae – the Supernal Genetrixes, Guardians or Wellsprings of the Seven Streams of Life or Virtue. They are the Seven Faces/Powers/Spirits of Dea, Our Divine Mother God, in rarefied angelic form. [3b]

As ArchMadria Candra Sophia stated “I can’t begin to explain how reading this has unified the Christian Goddess in whom I strongly believe, with the very Goddess [Eurynome] whose myth underlies the foundation of Filianism. Like the floor safe built into the foundation.”

Do read the whole article, only an extract is reproduced here.

The Pagan Origins of the Gnostic Sophia

by Miguel Conner | Jul 26, 2016

QUOTE
The Primordial Sophia

The original blueprint for the Gnostic Sophia is located in one of the earliest creation stories (older even than Genesis): The Pelasgian Creation Myth.

In this narrative, a divine being named Eurynome descends from the void and fashions the cosmos from the chaos. Creation is ushered by her dance upon the primordial waters, resulting in the formation of the planets, stars and elements into actuality. She also conceives a godlike serpent named Ophion. Eurynome and Ophion engage in a second, more seductive dance that ends in copulation. She then transforms into a dove and hovers over the sea, eventually laying a massive egg. Ophion coils around the egg seven times until it is hatched and all living creatures come forth. Eurynome sets a male and female Titan to overlook each heaven.
Eurynome and Ophion rule over creation in harmony, until the serpent claims he is the sole supreme being of the universe. This causes Eurynome to wage war against Ophion and ultimately banish him into the depths of the earth. In the end, she finds herself alone atop of the cosmos, yearning for another like her to keep her company.

At first glance, the Pelasgian Creation Myth appears like another dramatic, Greek account of how reality came to be. However, a deeper look reveals a proto-Sophia in the character of Eurynome:

► Sophia is cast into the chaos from an undivided nothingness (The Secret Book of John, On the Origin of the World). The Gnostic Valentinians referred to the fundamental principles of consciousness, the primaeval Father and Mother, as Bythos and Sege (Abyss and Silence in Greek). They represented a state of ultimate, undivided existence, similar to where Eurynome originated from.

► Sophia is responsible for the conception of matter (The Valentinian Cosmology, The Secret Book of John). Like Eurynome, she moves back and forth over the primordial waters, as well as gives birth to a serpent-like monster (Sophia’s offspring was called Yaldabaoth, often associated with the Old Testament God).

► Sophia is symbolized as a dove in Gnosticism. The Acts of Thomas proclaims, “Come, she that manifests the hidden things and makes the unspeakable things plain, the holy dove.” As her aspect of Wisdom/Shekinah in the Old Testament, Sophia is referred to as a dove (Song of Solomon 1:15, Song of Solomon 5:2). The symbol would be later adopted by Christianity in the form of the Holy Spirit, although both the Shekinah and Sophia were also recognized as the Holy Spirit.

► Sophia’s offspring rebels against her, claiming to be the only Supreme Being (The Secret Book of John, The Hypostasis of the Archons). The Hypostasis of the Archons relates how Yaldabaoth “because of his power and his ignorance and is arrogance he said, with his power, ‘It is I who am God; there is none apart from me.’ When he said this, he sinned against the entirety.” In The Pelasgian Creation Myth, the serpent Ophion “vexed Eurynome by claiming to be the author of the Universe.”

► In her higher avatar of Barbelo, Sophia assigns a male and female pair of Aeons to each of the layers of the mind of God (The Secret Book of John). Eurynome does the same, albeit with Titans ruling over the planetary spheres.

► In virtually all Gnostic texts, Sophia finds herself yearning for another like her once she lingers in the manifest Unlike the open-ended story of Eurynome, Jesus Christ comes to her like a saving knight or lost friend.

It should be noted that The Pelasgian Creation Myth is also a foundation for the Book of Genesis. Eurynome is responsible for naming all the creatures of Earth, as was Adam. The serpent in both myths plays the antagonist role (however, the serpent is often associated with wisdom goddesses in Paganism, and is frequently a positive figure in Gnosticism). During the conflict between Eurynome and Ophion, she “bruised his head with her heel.” In Genesis 3:15, the seed of Eve is prophesized to bruise the head the serpent with her heel, which has been taken as the coming of Jesus Christ to redeem the world from Satan.”

[8.73] Seven nations inhabit the Peloponnese. Two of them are aboriginal, and still continue in the regions where they dwelt at the first – to wit, the Arcadians and the Cynurians. A third, that of the Achaeans, has never left the Peloponnese, but has been dislodged from its own proper country, and inhabits a district which once belonged to others.

The Arcadians were Pelasgians

Book 2 – EUTERPE

[2.171] On this lake it is that the Egyptians represent by night his sufferings whose name I refrain from mentioning, and this representation they call their Mysteries. I know well the whole course of the proceedings in these ceremonies, but they shall not pass my lips. So too, with regard to the mysteries of Ceres, which the Greeks term “the Thesmophoria,” I know them, but I shall not mention them, except so far as may be done without impiety. The daughters of Danaus brought these rites from Egypt, and taught them to the Pelasgic women of the Peloponnese. Afterwards, when the inhabitants of the peninsula were driven from their homes by the Dorians, the rites perished. Only in Arcadia, where the natives remained and were not compelled to migrate, their observance continued. [4a]

Virgil (Aeneid, VIII, V. 62-63), writes:
“It is said that the first dwellers of our Italy were the Pelasgians” .
From the ancient authors we have learned that before the arrival of the Greeks, those territories were known as Pelasgia, the several sources inform to us moreover, than the Greeks learned from the Pelasgians not only the art of the working of the metals, of the construction of walls, but they learned, improving it, their way of writing and made their divinity their own.
Several populations, species the pelasgic one, have given to the country their name. [4b]

~and~

Aegean Sea

The name Pelasgians (Greek: Πελασγοί, Pelasgoí; singular: Πελασγός, Pelasgós) was used by some ancient Greek writers to refer to populations that were either the ancestors of the Greeks or preceded the Greeks in Greece, “a hold-all term for any ancient, primitive and presumably indigenous people in the Greek world”. In general, “Pelasgian” has come to mean more broadly all the indigenous inhabitants of the Aegean Sea region and their cultures before the advent of the Greek language.

In 1955, Robert Graves in his mythography The Greek Myths claims that the Pelasgian creation myth involves a singular creatrix goddess who dominates humans and predates other deities. The goddess gives birth to all things, fertilised not by any male opposite, but by symbolic seeds in the form of the wind, beans, or insects. [4c]

Comment by ArchMatrona Ghrian of the Lucienne tradition https://deamatronablog.wordpress.com : “In its original, matriarchal version, it was probably a beautiful story”.

Déanic Scriptural links to Eurynome

1. The Creation

1:1. Before and beyond all things is the Mistress of All Things, and when nothing was, She was. 2. And having no solid place that Her feet might rest upon, She divided the sea from the sky, and made a dance of solitary splendour upon the crested deeps.

2:1. But one there was that had not been shaped by Her, and that was not Her daughter, nor a creature of spirit. But this was the space between the fragments and the nothingness that had been before things were. It had not energy nor delight, but only weight. It had not shape, but could only coil and uncoil itself about the things that were. It was the Snake, and was not silver, but black. 2.
The Snake hated all things that had become, and hated the separation of the waters and the sky. It hated light and energy, desiring all to be darkness and nothingness.

2:15. But the Mistress of All Things saw this and descended to the earth, placing Her heel upon the head of the Snake and bruising it.

3:3. And She set Her seven Powers in the firmament, giving one to rule each colour of the earth.

The Mythos of the Divine Maid

1:1. When the first night had come upon the world, the Mistress of All Things stood alone once more, as She had in the beginning. 2. For a terrible abyss had opened to lie between the world and She, and Her creatures could not look upon Her brightness.

3. And She stood in contemplation upon the waters of the first darkness; like a great Dove upon the waters She brooded. 4. And She became absorbed within Her and communed with Her own Self; and Her light ceased to shine forth from Her, and yet Her light grew greater. 5. And She fell to Her knees. And the surface of the waters became turbulent, and the great waves curled over Her, and their white foam could not be seen in all that darkness.

6. And when the waters became calm again, the Mistress of All Things rose to Her feet. 7. For She had conceived a Daughter that was not separate from Her, but one with Her, and the child of Her Light.

Pelasgian Creation Myth – the earliest in Europe

Eurynome by Hong Eun-Young [5]
Eurynome was easily the most important Goddess of Pelasgian myth. She was the Great Goddess, Mother, Creatrix, Ruler, called the Goddess of All Things.

Eurynome was born from Chaos, and her first work was to separate the water from the sky. When she had accomplished this, she began to dance across the water. It was a beautiful, sensual dance of creation. [6]

Dove sat on the world egg artist unknown

She assumed the form of a dove, brooding on the waves and, in due process of time, laid the Universal Egg. [7]

Out tumbled all things that exist, her children: sun, moon, planets, stars, the earth with its mountains and rivers, its trees, herbs, and living creatures. [7]

Theia (meaning Lady of the shining blue of the sky, sight as in the all-seeing and precious value of gold, silver and gemstones)
and Hyperion (meaning watcher from above, light and the cycles of day and night, sun and moon)

the Moon and the power of enchantment;
Phoebe (meaning brilliance, prophetic wisdom at earth’s oracular midpoint – Delphi)
and Atlas (navigation, and the art of astronomy)

the planet Mars and the power of growth;
Dione (meaning Divine One and Oracle at Dodona) or Eurybia (bright goddess)

Patriarchal Demotion of the Divine Feminine

Myth version 2 introduces a male spouse

Eurynome by Hrana Janto

Catching the north wind at her back and rubbing it between her hands, she warms the pneuma and spontaneously generates the
serpent Ophion, who mates with her. [6]

Eurynome’s husband Ophion “the Serpent” & Eurynome wife of Ophion [13]

Greek Pelasgian Creation Myth by jessicasroux

At her bidding, Ophion coiled seven times about this egg, until it hatched and split in two. Out tumbled all things that exist, her children: sun, moon, planets, stars, the earth with its mountains and rivers, its trees, herbs, and living creatures. [6]

Comment by ArchMatrona Ghrian of the Lucienne tradition https://deamatronablog.wordpress.com  : Furthermore, instead of sitting on the Cosmic Egg herself, [like a normal, mother bird would do], Eurynome tells Ophion, the male snake, to wrap himself around it, [as snakes do their eggs] and warm it and hatch it.

Myth version 3

The male spouse attempts to usurp.

Eurynome and Ophion made their home upon Mount Olympus, where he vexed her by claiming to be the author of the Universe.
Forthwith she bruised his head with her heel, kicked out his teeth, and banished him to the dark caves below the earth. [6]

In the soil of Arcadia the Pelasgians spring up from Ophion’s teeth, scattered under the heel of Eurynome, who kicked the serpent from their home on Mount Olympus for his boast of having created all things. [7]

Myth 4

Her daughter and son banish their parents.

Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibliotheca 1. 503 ff (trans. Aldrich) (Greek mythographer C2nd A.D.) :
“He [Orpheus] sang of . . . How, in the beginning, Ophion and Eurynome, daughter of Okeanos (Oceanus), governed the world from
snow-clad Olympos; how they were forcibly supplanted, Ophion by Kronos (Cronus), Eurynome by Rhea; of their fall into the waters
of Okeanos.” [7]

Myth 5

Comment by ArchMatrona Ghrian of the Lucienne tradition https://deamatronablog.wordpress.com : “And still later, another goddess by the same name, Eurynome, the Oceanide, ends up as one of the many wives of, Zeus, and the mother of the Graces.

Patriarchal redactors have rewritten all three stories about Eurynome:  She is pictured as a female-failure in need of a male-savior, just like the Gnostic Sophia.  Eurynome is portrayed as a failed wife [divorced and estranged from Ophion, the snake], failed Queen of Heaven, Creatrix and Mother of the Gods [because She is not powerful enough to punish, and banish Her ungrateful and rebellious children].  It is only later, when She becomes the wife of Her grandson, the male god, i.e.,  Zeus, the Son of God, that she is redeemed and becomes the mother of the Graces.”

Myth 6 – A male Demon

Part III, Sophia, Eurynome and the Seven Janati

10 Abalon/Sept. 14

Abaldi/Thurs. Day of Madria Thame’ (Themis).

O, Madria Thame’, Jana of Justice, Order and Harmony, be with us.

~

(The Seven Rays of Divine Manifestation.)  In Deanic language, the Seven are of the Three-Fold Heaven (3 upward: (Madrias Candre, Raya and Rhave)  and of the Four-Fold Earth (4 downward: Madrias Sushuri, Thame’, Vikhe and Mati).

~

When ArchMatrona Ghrian and I first formulated the idea that Dea is One and Three and Seven, this formula expressed both the thealogy of the One Dea in Her Tri-une Form of Mother, Daughter and Great Mother and also of the One Dea in Her Septad Form of the Seven Janati.

In our religion, we are often presented with the analogy of the prism. Just as white light flows through the prism and separates into seven colored rays, so too, the Pure Light of Dea is diffracted into Seven Intelligent Living Streams (each Stream expressing itself through a certain color.) These Seven Rays of Intelligent Light take on the form of angels.

Just as the Holy Daughter takes on the Form of Soul, and yet, She remains Dea Filia (the Divine Daughter God); so the Janati take on the form of angels, but yet, They remain Dea.

Janite Thealogy is based, in part, upon the Divine Sophia, Who is known as both Mother and Daughter in Her Tri-une Form as Mother, Daughter and Holy Soul.

Sophia is pan-cultural. She is not limited to Judaic-Christianity. Many worship Her from all religious walks of life.

As Rudolph Steiner and others have noted, Sophia is the Mother of the Seven Powers. These Seven Powers were sometimes considered to be angels although Gnosticism refers to them as Archons (which we consider a patriarchal demotion of the Sophian Myth as at the time, Gnostics did not see manifest creation in a positive light). Although archon means ruler, in Gnosticism, Archons were not the good guys.

Sophia is also known as the Goddess of Heaven and the Mother of the Stars. Even in Gnosticism, She is known as the Mother of All the Living and the Highest Ruler over the visible Universe. She is said to have shaped manifest creation based upon the heavenly prototypes and She forms the seven star circles or spheres over which the planetary powers are placed. These planetary spheres, or heavens, were, for the ancients, the highest regions of the created universe.

Considered by Steiner to be the new Isis, and, indeed, She was often equated with Isis in the past, Sophia is the Pneumatic Essence from which all souls draw their origin. In Her lower or Daughter form, She is the Mediatrix between the upper and lower realms. It is She, Who is the one Who is crowned with the Seven Stars.

More and more, within and without Christianity, Sophia is swiftly returning to Her original Divine status. (1 +2) Many mainstream Christians, are beginning to recognize Her as the Holy Spirit from Whom emit the Seven Gifts/the Seven Spirits.

Proverbs mentions Her Seven Pillars.

As we see from the above, in many ways, it is from Sophia that comes the Seven.

In the Myth of Eurynome, She created the Seven Planetary Powers, putting a Titaness and a Titan over each. From the Primordial Feminine standpoint, Theia ruled the Sun and was given the power of illumination; Phoebe ruled the Moon and was given the power of enchantment; Dione  ruled Mars and was given the power of growth; Metis was given the planet Mercury and the power of wisdom; Themis was given the planet Jupiter and the power of law; Tethys was given the planet Venus and the power of love; and Rhea was set over the planet Saturn and given the power of peace.

Image result for the seven alchemical planets

In Janite thealogy, the Janati are not the actual Powers, themselves. Rather, the Janati rule over the Planetary Spheres and They were given the Powers. These Powers represent the Seven Streams of life which contain the Primordial Essence or, perhaps we could say, the quantum information which is the base of all that is manifested into reality.

We believe that like the Holy Daughter, the Janati are Immanent, meaning, though They stem from the Pleroma, They work within and throughout manifest creation. And while Dea, on one level, is Supreme and Above the All and yet She is One with us and She hears our cries, so too, the Janati, being angelic Forms of Dea, though they represent Powers beyond our ken, can hear us and help us.

We are often asked, what is the difference between a Jana and an angel?  Angels were created by God. They are not God. And so, we may pray to them in the form of asking their help and assistance. But, we may not honor them as God. We may not worship them.

The Janati are UnCreated because They are God, They are Forms of Dea and so we may pray to Them. We may honor Them as God. We may worship Them. Especially when we consider Sophia. She is Their Mother… She gave Them birth… They are of Her. They are One with Her. They are Her Seven Spirits. Her Seven Stars.

The Festival of Cerealia

21 Ceres/July 31

Lunadi/Monday.

Day of Madria Candra.

O, Madria Candra, Jana of Reflection, Reason and Purity, be with us.

22 Ceres/Aug.1 marks the Summer festival of Cerealia. This feast is named after the ancient Roman festival which was celebrated in honor of Ceres, the Roman form of Demeter, in April.

Image result for image of goddess ceres

Ceres was one of the Di Consentes or chief deities of the Roman pantheon. Known as the goddess of agriculture, grain and the love a mother bears her child , she taught the people how to grow food and make flour and bread. She was kind and benevolent and was considered to be the nurturer of the human race. There was a Roman saying that if something was ‘fit for Ceres’, it was splendid. (1).  The word cereals comes from the name, Ceres.

Like her Greek counterpart, Demeter, the sacrifice of Ceres lay in the loss of her daughter, Prosperina (Greek:Persephone) who was also titled, Kore Soteria, meaning, the Saviour Maiden. (2)

The sacrificial Corn Mother or Corn Maiden is honored in North America by the First Nations. There are two main versions of her mythos. In the following version, the Corn Maiden willingly gives up her life in order to nourish humanity. She is called the First Mother:

Our scriptures and our liturgy speak of the Holy Daughter as being like the corn that was reaped in silence. Like to the corn, My Soul was cut down by the scythe of death and like to the corn did it rise anew. 19) For I am the ear of corn that is reaped in silence. And She said: Like to the grain was My Body broken between the stones of death.  (The Mythos of the Divine Maid, Chapter VII vs 18-20.

These three myths speak of great sacrifice on the part of either the Mother or the Daughter. And each is in relation to or symbolized by corn.

Corn, unique to the Americas and is sacred. It is also sacred to the First Nations who believed it was of divine origin and it has a very important tradition here in Massachusetts. If Squanto, of the Wampanoag Tribe, did not teach the Mayflower pilgrims how to grow corn and the secret of its fertilization, who knows how they would have fared.

During the Festival of Cerealia, we bow our heads in thanksgiving for the first harvest of grains; these edible seeds used for food.

We shower gratitude upon our Holy Mother Who, in the fullness of the Sacred Season of Summer, blesses the fruitfulness of the earth with the golden grains of life. We also thank the Holy Daughter, Our Kore Soteria, the ear of corn that is reaped in silence for Her holy Sacrifice.

The Supernal Mother nourishes our bodies through the bread of the earth. The Holy Daughter nourishes our souls through the Bread of Communion. Blessed are They.

  5. For further reading on grains:
New research indicates that oats were ground to make a rough flour or meal 32,600 years ago. That is, firmly in the Palaeolithic era. This was the conclusion of a team from the University of Florence, based on evidence from a tool found in the Paglicci caves in Puglia, southern Italy. In June 1989, a kind of stone pestle or grinding tool was found in the cave. It was carefully stored, and a in 2010 a new study began. The researchers were able to isolate and analyse starch residues from the tool. There were five types identified but the most common was Avena barbata, a species of wild oat. Another grass grain was a form of millet. Acorns from oak trees were also present.
And just how did Paglicci people eat the ground grain? “Presumably they mixed the flour with water and cooked [it],” says Mariotti Lippi.
But she’s unwilling to speculate whether the outcome was a kind of flat oatcake or a gruel or porridge.
As the historical breadbasket of Italy, the southern region carries on the bulk of the country’s bakery traditions. Puglia has cone-shaped trullis, traditional seaside villas. Previous work shows that sorghum, another cereal grain, could have entered the human diet as early as 105,000 years ago.

Where East meets West

28 Maia/15 May

~

Quan Yin, Mary, Sophia, Tara and Durga (the Mother Goddess of the Universe). These are Living Stream Images/Form of Dea from both the East and the West.

The Lotus of the East

The Water Lily of the West.

It’s interesting, the difference between the Eastern and Western spiritual mindset. I’m sure that many books have and will continue to be written upon the subject. But, perhaps, the most important point, is that very point where East and West are able to meet. Symbolic of that meeting point are the above Living Stream Images/Forms of the Divine Mother/Daughter: Quan Yin, Mary, Sophia, Tara and Durga. Indeed, Mary is known as the Quan Yin of the West, while conversely, Quan Yin is known as the Mary of the East. Many, including my former Reiki teacher, taught that Mary and Quan Yin are the same Divine Being.

I have experienced three of their devotional cults, that of Tara, Quan Yin and Mary and they have all left me with the same feeling: that of being most intimately Loved by my Mother; She Who never left my side.

(The goddess Sunna, Daughter of the Goddess, Sol or the Sun Goddess of the West.)

(The goddess Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess of the East.)

I have always appreciated Serene Mother Georgia’s astute observance of the fact that Dea presents Her Face to all of Her people in an image through which they may recognize as their Mother.

She and She alone, Our Divine Mother God, is the meeting point between East and West. Each have their mantras. Each have their rosaries. Each have their system of worship. And each appear in many images and under many names. For example, there are many forms of Tara, the Mother of all the Buddhas. There are many images of Quan Yin, She Who hears the cries of the World. There are many cultic apparitions of the Blessed Mary, She Who is the Mother of Mercy. (Remember that many in the Russian Church understood Her to be the incarnation of the Divine Sophia.)

The Goddess Mawu by Lisa Iris.

Through-out tens of thousands of years, if not longer, each people had their own specific cultural image of the Great Mother; a Face through which they could recognize their own Mother.

For other Faces of the Mother, we may also look to the African Nations, the Latin Nations, the Native American tribes, the Inuit, the Aborignal Tribes and the Polynesians, the Arabians and the ancient Hebrews, indeed, you cannot point to anyplace on Earth where the Divine Mother was not worshiped in one form or the other, without interruption, until the onset of the Abrahamic religions.

And, I can’t help but think how these religions have, through-out the centuries, often used their Form/Idea of the Father God, as an excuse and as a tool for violence and war, believing that their Father God was the only True Form of the Father. On the other hand, there is no evidence of any devotional cults of the Divine Mother warring with each other over whose Form/Image of the Mother was right or wrong. Nor in the present. I don’t see any disagreement amongst those who worship the Divine Mother God as to Her identity. We all intuitively understand that She appears to Her children in an Image/Form that they may recognize and so, She appears in many diverse Forms.

While the Divine Mother is the True Meeting Point between East and West, the methods of worship, terminology, prayers, ritual, liturgy, feast days, thealogy and so forth are as far apart as, well, East and West! They are two hemispheres that when joined together, form the whole sphere. Together, they form the whole spectrum of worship.

Many of those who have had Near Death Experiences will state (as I have posted many times): religion does not matter to God. Religion is important to God because it is important to us. Religions are cultural institutions.

And so, we each, through-out the world, tend to see Deity through our own cultural lenses. And oftentimes, these cultural lenses are misunderstood or degraded by others not of our culture.

Janites consider themselves to be pan-European. This does not preclude the last 2,000 years of European history. We may not have had a Tara or a Durga, but we had Mary and the goddesses-turned-saints, especially St. Brighid.

We know that Mary was conflated with Isis/Diana and Sophia, Whom I call the Cosmic Mary.  Who can deny that She was treated as Divine through-out the millennia?

The image of Mary being crowned with twelve stars and the moon at Her feet has long been a traditional rendition of the Blessed Virgin Mary based upon Revelation in the Christian bible: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars” (12:1). This was attributed to Mary by the Church.

She is often depicted as crushing the snake with the heel of her foot. Stars also grace her dark blue mantle/cloak. The miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, shows Her being clothed with the sun, the moon at Her feet, Her mantle covered in stars. (This same is said about the Holy Daughter in our scriptures.)

The Woman crowned with stars, with the moon at her feet. The one we called Queen of Heaven.  She was always the Great One in disguise. She was veiled, but we knew Her, intuitively, yes, we knew Her. And as the Divine Sophia once told a seer, “When you prayed to Mary, you were praying to Me“.

The Madrians were very Marian-oriented. It is my understanding that some of the original Madrians came out of the Catholic Church. Back then, the Catholic Church was still very highly Marian-centered from Her magnificent shrines to the right of the altar, always graced with flowers and candles, to Her many feast days, public rosaries, public processions, coronation and novenas. Great cathedrals, which were magnificent works of art in stone, were built in Her honor. Countless parishes and numerous children were named after Her if not by the first name, often by the middle name. Those of us who have the middle name of Marie were named after the Blessed Mary. There was not a day that went by when a devout Catholic would not have prayed their rosary or have been seen without their Miraculous Medal.

It quickly became obvious to me that many of the feast days of the Holy Daughter, in the Deanic Faith, were based upon Marian feast days, as was the rosary, the coronation, praying to be protected beneath Her Mantle and so forth.

It was precisely because the Madrians seemed to have so much in common with Marian worship and imagery that I was initially drawn to the Faith. I immediately felt at home. I was overjoyed. I had found Dea, not as the human Mary of Nazareth, who, we were told was not Divine, but as Mother God, Herself.

The Cosmic Mary was the Western Image/Form of Her for the past 2,000 years. Pre-dating Mary, those of us in the West had our  Greek/Roman/Celtic/Germanic and Norse pre-Christian forms of the Divine Mother.

Moving on from imagery, another important aspect of the Western mindset is faith. I like this definition of faith from the Christian bible:

Hebrews 11:1: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Simply put, the biblical definition of faith is “trusting in something you cannot explicitly prove.”

We sometimes call our religion the Faith. I’ve even heard Wicca referred to as ‘the Faith‘. This is because in Western Tradition, Faith also means a ‘religion’. A religion, any religion, requires a certain amount of faith.

There were Gnostics who derided the notion of faith. They taught that one must have gnosis in order to be saved. I agree that it is gnosis which leads to enlightenment, but before gnosis, one must have faith. Faith is always the beginning, the first step in any religion. Though there are those who have come to their spiritual beliefs through a most profound, otherwise-un-explainable experience, these doors to spirituality are rare.

Every single religion on this planet requires faith as well as knowledge. Every religion has its god/s and tenets that requires faith. You might believe in something because it is reasonable and makes sense to you, but if it is not something that has concrete evidence, then it still requires belief/faith on your part. You assent to believe in it, though there is no evidence. That is faith.

Belief: to have confidence in the truth, the existence, or the reliability of something, although without absolute proof that one is right in doing so

Belief and faith are pretty much the same thing. We cannot recite the Creed without first having the faith that it is true. Every time we say: I believe, we are saying: I have faith in…. So, faith is a large and important part of the Western mindset.

The Western mindset also would include relating to the Janati through the Western cultural lens.

We, in the more Western forms of the Deanic religion, have a deeply personal and intimate relationship not only with the Divine Feminine Trinity, but also with the Janati. This stems from, well, I can only speak from Catholic and Orthodox Christian culture… (Western and Eastern forms of Christianity)… where the angels are revered. We prayed to them for help when we were in need. Each Archangel is the Patron of certain areas of specialty; each had their correspondences and there are so many tales of miracles! We wore their medals/amulets. We prayed their rosary chaplets (especially the chaplet of St. Michael.) We had a personal relationship with them.

We believed in the community of the saints… just as it does teach in our scriptures…we are all One Body in Dea, in Heaven and on Earth; although Janites will say, we are all One Soul in Dea.

And so, when we understand that the Janati are Streams of Dea in angelic form, and we are all part of the One Great Soul which includes the Janati. Why would we not have an intimate relationship with Them just as we have an intimate relationship with Dea? They are all One with Dea. They are part of the Communion of Ekklesia. In the liturgy, as in the original liturgy, we call upon the Janati to guard and witness our worship. Like Dea, They are always with us.

The Western goddesses in ancient times as well as modern were/are reverenced, revered; honored. They were worshiped, then and now, with hymns and incense, ritual and prayer. They had their own temples.  Why would the Janati be any different? For instance, the goddess Rhea, Whose name means flow; ease;,  was closely associated with the Great Mother Cybele. She was called the Great Mother, the Mother of the Gods and so forth. http://www.theoi.com/Titan/TitanisRhea.html. There were hymns in Her honor:

[13] XIII. TO RHEA http://www.theoi.com/Text/OrphicHymns1.html

The Fumigation from Aromatics.
Daughter of great Protogonus, divine, illustrious Rhea, to my pray’r incline,
Who driv’st thy holy car with speed along, drawn by fierce lions, terrible and strong.
Mother of Jove [Zeus], whose mighty arm can wield th’ avenging bolt, and shake the dreadful shield.
Drum-beating, frantic, of a splendid mien, brass-sounding, honor’d, Saturn’s [Kronos’] blessed queen.
Thou joy’st in mountains and tumultuous fight, and mankind’s horrid howlings, thee delight.
War’s parent, mighty, of majestic frame, deceitful saviour, liberating dame.
Mother of Gods and men, from whom the earth [Gaia] and lofty heav’ns [Ouranos] derive their glorious birth;
Th’ ætherial gales, the deeply spreading sea goddess ærial form’d, proceed from thee.
Come, pleas’d with wand’rings, blessed and divine, with peace attended on our labours shine;
Bring rich abundance, and wherever found drive dire disease, to earth’s remotest bound.

People prayed to Her and revered Her. The Jana, Rhea, aka Sai Rhave, is modeled upon this Titaness. Why should She be different in our ability to approach Her?

Janites do not view the Janati as Transcendent Powers Who are so far away and above us, that They cannot be reached. Dea is Power, itself and yet, we are One with Her, intimately one with Her and so we may be intimate with Her Seven Powers/Faces. This, if I may be so bold as to state, is the Western way of worship.

Distance is an illusion. The Celestial Mother is here and now, right beyond the Veil, but She is too Bright for us to see. In the Western form of the Faith, we do not limit the Power of Dea nor that of the Janati. There are no limitations of time or distance for Them. They exist in the Eternal Now, outside of time, space and distance.

Just as the Mother loves us and cares for us, so the Janati love and care for us because They are She. And just as there have been many miracles from the Archangels, so many of us have experienced great help and yes, even miracles from praying to the Janati and asking for Their help. They are an important part of the daily lives of the Janite and Lucienne communities.

The Janite and Lucienne Traditions formed because there was a need for a more Westernized version of the Faith. To the Western mind, many Eastern concepts, phrases, etc., might be very hard to grasp. And for many, mixing East and West does not always work well for them.

This does not mean that the Western mind or spirituality is inferior; it simply means that oftentimes, we each understand best through our own cultural lenses. The Janite Tradition attempts to present the Faith through the cultural lens of the West.

The Lucienne Tradition attempts to present the Faith through the specific cultural lens of the pre-Christian Norse.

Those of us who worship the Divine Mother through our own Western cultural lens realize how rich and varied and magickal and mystical is our own pan-European Tradition. We have so much from which to draw…both from Marian/Sophian and Celtic Pagan/Norse Heathen Traditions. We value our Western Tradition. It is our history; it is our way and it is our culture. It is in our forests; it is in our music and it is in feasts. It is in our hearts; it is in our souls and it is in our subconscious.  It is an integral part of us. It is our Soul Path. It is what is right for us. The Eastern Soul Path is right for others.

Here is a very interesting article I just stumbled upon. I found the personal experience of the author especially worth noting: http://interfaithmary.net/articles/mary-buddha.

a. Whether we approach the Deanic/Filianic religion from the West, from the East or from a blend of both, the Meeting Place always, always, most profoundly remains, Our Divine Mother and we, from both East and West, are Her Children of the Earth.

Eternal is the Light of the Mother.

Eternal is the Love of the Daughter.

Eternal is the Life of the Great Mother,

Dark beyond the light and Light beyond the Darkness.

Blessed is She.

It takes faith to recite this simple, yet most cosmically profound prayer. It implies belief.

May Our Lady bless you,

Blessed is She.
