Our Relationship with the Seven Janati

Our readers might be interested in the story of the Russian cosmonauts who saw Seven Angels in Space. I have seen the interviews and have watched their stories on several television shows and it has now been widely reported. When we think of the Janati as Planetary or Cosmic Powers, they can seem very far away. We might often feel that they have better things to do rather than helping us with our own, personal needs. And they might appear foreign to us. Impersonal. Out of touch and out of reach like the farthest stars in our galaxy.

That was how I felt when I first encountered them. At the same time, I was very intrigued by not only the idea of them but the beauty of them and what each of them represented.

Hailing from a Catholic background where we were personal friends with the saints in heaven and devotees of the Archangels, I had a deep desire to come to know the Janati. I wished to interact with each them on a personal and emotional basis rather than on just a thealogical and intellectual level. Both are necessary for true devotion!

I realized that if they are Emanations of Déa, then they are no more impersonal than is She. If I can have a close relationship with Déa, then I can have a close relationship with each of Her Seven Intelligent Emanations. The Seven Jeweled Rays. The Seven Royal Ladies of Déa.

They weren’t just Planetary Powers, they were also assigned to rule over the Cardinal Directions and the Five Primordial Elements. So each Jana ruled over the associations of their Primordial Element.

I began to think about Sai Thema (Thamé). She is of my favorite time of year: Fall. And my favorite time of day: Twilight. In our system, She rules over Earth and is Guardian of the West. She is the Janya of Justice, Order and Harmony. She shares this Season with Our Celestial Mother, Who manifests Law, Order and Harmony into motion.

(It is important to note that ‘Lady Justice’ was never depicted as being blindfolded until the 1500’s. Images of Sai Thema (Thamé) should never be blindfolded.)

Her Filianic name (and the noun), Thamé, is from Dharma, which means Firm Law and The Laws of Nature. (1) For Déanists, it also means the Harmony of Order. Her Greek name, Themis, means Law of Nature and Divine Law. Natural and Cosmic Law. Her Reginite/Janite name, Thema, translates to Queen. Sai Thema is the Queen of Natural and Cosmic Law, Order and Harmony.

She Rules over the Cosmic Above and the Earthly Below. Here below, I realized, she could help with all things that are related to Earth in addition to Justice, Order and Harmony. In answer to my prayers over the years, she has provided homes, jobs, court-related victories and all the things symbolized and embodied by the Element of Earth. There were times when right after praying for help, things would happen in such a way, there would be no doubt in my mind that it was Sai Thema who helped me. At times, the answers were downright miraculous. I try to always remember to end my prayer for the ‘highest good’ of the individual or situation.

In the same vein, I began to come to know Sai Vikhé as well. She protects my family; she protects the Ekklesia and she helps me when I need the courage to do things that are uncomfortable for me. When I sit before my campfire, I thank her for the warmth and wonder of Fire. Over time, I have become closer to some of the Janati than others, but they are always with me.

It was ArchMatrona Georgia Cobb of the Lady of Light Chantry who first came up with the Janati rosary. This was the origin of our beautiful Janati mantra prayers. She is the one who composed them by focusing on their Virtues. And that is when we realized how very important those Virtues were. She and I began to place a greater emphasis on them in our daily lives and in our teachings.

ArchMatrona Georgia also taught me, through her Janati rosary, that the Janati are Déa. They are not angels. They are not goddesses. They are Déa. That is when I realized that they are Emanations of Déa, Herself, in Seven Angelic Forms. As she had explained to me, when we pray to the Janati, we are praying to Dea. Once I became aware of that, I realized that Déa is One and Three and Seven. I was very happy to see this formula picked up in an article on the Chapel of Our Mother God website. I believe it is foundational thealogy for all Deanists.

And so I learned that the Janati were not just the Planetary Powers. They were not the Greek Titanides. They were Déa, Herself in Seven Angelic Forms.

These Seven are seen elsewhere, as the Seven Pillars of Sophia, the Seven Virgins of Sophia, the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit (Who is Female), the Seven Spirits before the Throne of God (the Seven Gifts are the Seven Spirits) and all of these have been shown to tie in with the Seven Planetary Powers in one way or another.

I greet the Janati each morning during my Aurora prayers. Oftentimes, this is when I will say a brief pray for others. I will ask Sai Sushuri Grace to help those who are sick. I will pray to Sai Thema for someone who is looking for a new home. I will ask Sai Vikhé to watch over my family and our country.

There are times, especially when I am working, that all I have time for is the greeting of the Janati in the Five Directions, a Hail, Déa prayer for the Holy Daughter and a quick scripture reading. I do like to include the Daughter of Light prayer if I have time.

I usually pray the Janati rosary of the day on my way to work. It doesn’t take long. These prayers and encounters (through the greeting) surround me with the Janati in the morning and all through the day. As I face each direction and greet the Janya, I am able to sense their Presence in my life.

After the rosary, during my 35 minute drive to work, I will try to think about which Virtue I will try to practice for the day. For example, if it is Columbadi/Fri, the Day of Sai Sushuri Grace, I will choose to try and be more compassionate or more merciful or more loving. I don’t always remember, especially if my day gets very busy, but I start the day with that intention. And, I often fail. Sometimes, quite miserably!  But I realize it is a learning process along my True Soul Path.

My way is not right for everyone. Some devotees simply offer a quick prayer in their own words or read scripture before heading off to work or starting their day. Just because I’m a rosary person, doesn’t mean that everyone is. I grew up with the rosary, so it is as much a part of me as brushing my teeth. Others prefer to pray in their own words or with simple prayers.

I found that what is important, as I was beginning to come to know the Janati, was being mindful of them and remembering that they are here to help and aide the Children of Déa in a deeply personal way. They are Déa! They are Déa in Her Seven Emanations!

During Evensong, I thank each of them for the day. I might whisper a quick little prayer of thanksgiving for any help and aide that I’ve been granted or for prayers answered. If the prayer was for something vital or for an emergency, I will often offer flowers and a liturgy or RoS/V in thanksgiving.

We don’t always see the ‘big picture’ as do the Janati. Sometimes, if prayers are not answered the way we would like, it is usually because either it is not for the highest good of the person or karma might be involved. But even then, help is offered in one way or another. Always.

Sometimes, we don’t realize that things have happened for a reason until we are much further down the road of Life. Sometimes, we don’t realize that we have received the help we needed at the time. This knowledge often comes to us when we are in Avala, the resting place between lives. (See books by Dr. Michael Newton and Dr. Brian Weiss). 

All in all, I have learned that Trust comes and Love follows. Relationships are a two-way street. I have benefited, greatly, from coming to know and experience the Janati and I try to honor them, in return. I believe that their Virtues form the Pathway to Heaven.

The Seven Janati and Divine Sophia

O, Glorious Agia Theia, brightly shining One, be with us. O, Resplendent One, clothed in radiant gold, dazzling as the Sun, hear our prayer. 

Illumine us with Truth and instil in us the sweetness which comes with a serene mind and a joy-filled heart. Help us to remember that joy comes from within and not from without. May we learn to nurture it in our hearts that it may overflow unto others who might be in need of the flame of cheer and comfort in their lives. And may (state request).

Today, as part of our series on the correlations of Divine Sophia and our Clear Recital scriptures, we are going to take a moment to discover the relationship between Sophia and the Seven Janati.

At the end of this article is a very exciting discovery, a lengthy article showing my own thealogy that the Holy Spirit is Seven-fold.

Holy Sophia is associated with the Divine Seven in different ways.  In Gnosticism, She emanates/creates the Seven Feminine Aeons;  in the book of Proverbs, She sends out her Seven Virgin Handmaidens and She has hewn out the Seven Pillars and as the Holy Spirit in Christianity, Who is more appropriately called Mother Spirit as in ancient times, She sends forth the Seven Rays of the Gifts.

In Gnosticism, Sophia is the Ruler of the Seven Planetary Powers, however, these Powers are Archons. (i.e. not the good guys) and in Gnostic cosmology, Sophia triumphs over them and becomes Ruler over the Seven Spheres.

In her book, Sophia, Goddess of Wisdom, Bride of God, author and scholar, Caitlin Matthews includes a picture of an unusual statue of Sophia made of rosewood where She is holding a seven pointed star. This sculpture based upon a vision or apparition that was experienced by the artist, Bryce Muir.  This star signifies Her overcoming of the seven planetary Archons and Her rising to become the Mother of the Ogdoad or Eighth Realm. Ms. Matthews goes on to state that “the Descents of Sophia, like the Seven-fold Descent of Inanna to the Underworld, pass through all levels of experience making Sophia a potent Companion to all souls.”

These Aeons were male and female. The Female Aeons are: Rejoicing; Blessedness; Love; Peace; Gladness; Truth and Faith. Like the Janae, these Seven Aeons are both Divine, having emanated from Holy Sophia and They are also angelic in Being.

In some (though not all) Gnostic texts, Aeons are often referred to as being androgynous. A better way to think of them is that they are ‘twin souls’.  We must remember that there are many different cosmologies in Gnosticism and various belief systems as well. While some Gnostics understood the Aeons to be androgynous, others thought of them as Primordial Ideas, while still others believed they were syzygies or ‘yoked pairs’, the latter being the Janite point of view.  They are Light Beings and are sometimes likened to angels. And so, similar to the Deanic/Filianic teachings on the Janae, they are both Divine and angelic.

Moving on to Proverbs, the Divine Sophia has sent out Her Seven Virgins or Handmaidens and has ‘hewn out Her Seven Pillars”.

Now, keep in mind, when Wisdom is personified in the biblical texts, we capitalize the W. Wisdom personified is Sophia. When wisdom is not being personified, we do not capitalize the first letter.

In this particular text, Wisdom is personified. Wisdom, Sophia, sends out Her Handmaidens to invite everyone to Her feast of wisdom. Ms. Matthews states, that the Handmaidens are the assessors of Wisdom.

It would not be until the Middle Ages when they would be transformed into the Daughters of Sophia and an English cleric, Alcuin (735-804 AD) would associate the Seven Pillars with the Seven Liberal Arts.

These Handmaidens are depicted on the right-hand doorway of the Portail Royal at Chartres. The central figure is the Black Virgin of Wisdom, the Virgin Mary being surrounded by the Seven Handmaidens representing the Liberal Arts. As Albert the Great taught that Mary, herself was the possessor of the Seven Liberal Arts. Elsewhere, Ms. Matthews explains that the Seven Pillars have also been conflated with h the Seven Liberal Arts, the seven days of the week, the seven heavens and the Holy Spirit .

As we can see, there is a correlation between each of the Seven Liberal Arts and the Janati, Themselves.

Grammar/Moon/Sai Candre’.

Dialectic/Mercury/Sai Mati Sage.

Rhetoric/Venus/Sai Sushuri Grace

Music/Sun/Sai Raya Theia.

Arithmetic/Mars/Agia Vikhe.

Geometry/Jupiter/Sai Thema.

Astronomy/Saturn/Sai Rhea.

The purification of the soul, through the seven planetary experiences, was common to many cultures and traditions. (Sophia, Goddess of Wisdom and Bride of God).

So, here we have Seven Handmaidens of Sophia and the Seven Pillars of Wisdom. We will revisit these Seven Handmaidens when we study the correlation of Divine Sophia as our High Priestess.

Now, we look at the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Sophia is the Holy Spirit both pre- Christian and Christian.

The Seven Planetary Powers of Pagan Tradition become the seven gifts of the Spirit in Christianity: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety (Faith) and Fear of God (nowadays this is rendered as Awe PL)….(Sophia, Goddess of Wisdom and Bride of God).  

This amazes me. I had already correlated the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit with the Seven Janae before I had read this.

Ms. Matthews, in her above-mentioned book, does a fine job of showing forth Sophia as the Holy Spirit. The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit are often referred to as individual spirits, the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
    the Spirit of counsel and of might,
    the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord, etc. 

The New Testament speaks about The Seven Spirits of God. In Rev., these Seven Spirits are also known as the Seven Lamps which are before the throne of God. And it talks about ‘He who has the Seven Spirits of God.” This is a much neglected concept within Christianity probably due to the fact that it would call into question the theology of the Trinity and yet, these Seven Spirits of God are mentioned a few times in the New Testament.

Again, I was blown away by the following article which came to the same conclusion as did I: http://www.lasan.org/lasan-readings/english/holy-spirit/seven-holy-spirit-gifts.htm and that is, the Seven Spirits of the Holy Spirit. This article refers to the Holy Spirit as “he”, but the Holy Spirit is the Mother Spirit, Dea Madria, Mari Sophia.

The above mentioned article expertly disproves the various theories about the identity of the Seven Spirits. The author even mentions the Three-Fold Spirits of Heaven and the Four-fold Spirits of Earth…. Deanic teaching right there of the Janati!!!!

The author begins his summary thusly: It is erroneous to argue that the seven Spirits are seven angels, and it is insufficient to claim that the title the seven Spirits refers to the Spirit of God merely in a general way. It is not even adequate to assert that the seven Spirits are the Spirit of God in the fullness or completeness of His energies or operation. The title the seven Spirits, like all appellations of the Spirit, unveils something very particular concerning the divine Spirit.

While quite lengthy, this is a remarkable article and it is highly recommended as one of  the ways of understanding the Janae.

In summary,  Divine Sophia is the Ruler of the Planetary Powers; She emanates the Seven Feminine Aeons; She sends out Her Seven Handmaidens and hews out the Seven Pillars of Wisdom which have variously been identified, as Ms. Matthews explains, with the Seven Liberal Arts, the seven days of the week, the seven heavens and the Holy Spirit and finally, She is the Seven-Fold Holy Spirit, Who, as Caitlyn Matthews so beautifully depicts in her book, holds the Seven Spirits in Her lap as Doves, ready to be sent out into the world.

I would like to conclude with this prayer to the Janati by Sorella Roselyn.

Part III, Sophia, Eurynome and the Seven Janati

  (The Seven Rays of Divine Manifestation.)  In Deanic language, the Seven are of the Three-Fold Heaven (3 upward: (Madrias Candre, Raya and Rhave)  and of the Four-Fold Earth (4 downward: Madrias Sushuri, Thame’, Vikhe and Mati).

When ArchMatrona Ghrian and I first formulated the idea that Dea is One and Three and Seven, this formula expressed both the thealogy of the One Dea in Her Tri-une Form of Mother, Daughter and Great Mother and also of the One Dea in Her Septad Form of the Seven Janati.

 

 

In our religion, we are often presented with the analogy of the prism. Just as white light flows through the prism and separates into seven colored rays, so too, the Pure Light of Dea is diffracted into Seven Intelligent Living Streams (each Stream expressing itself through a certain color.) These Seven Rays of Intelligent Light take on the form of angels.

Just as the Holy Daughter takes on the Form of Soul, and yet, She remains Dea Filia (the Divine Daughter God); so the Janati take on the form of angels, but yet, They remain Dea.

Janite Thealogy is based, in part, upon the Divine Sophia, Who is known as both Mother and Daughter in Her Tri-une Form as Mother, Daughter and Holy Soul.

Sophia is pan-cultural. She is not limited to Judaic-Christianity. Many worship Her from all religious walks of life.

As Rudolph Steiner and others have noted, Sophia is the Mother of the Seven Powers. These Seven Powers were sometimes considered to be angels although Gnosticism refers to them as Archons (which we consider a patriarchal demotion of the Sophian Myth as at the time, Gnostics did not see manifest creation in a positive light). Although archon means ruler, in Gnosticism, Archons were not the good guys.

Sophia is also known as the Goddess of Heaven and the Mother of the Stars. Even in Gnosticism, She is known as the Mother of All the Living and the Highest Ruler over the visible Universe. She is said to have shaped manifest creation based upon the heavenly prototypes and She forms the seven star circles or spheres over which the planetary powers are placed. These planetary spheres, or heavens, were, for the ancients, the highest regions of the created universe.

Considered by Steiner to be the new Isis, and, indeed, She was often equated with Isis in the past, Sophia is the Pneumatic Essence from which all souls draw their origin. In Her lower or Daughter form, She is the Mediatrix between the upper and lower realms. It is She, Who is the one Who is crowned with the Seven Stars.

More and more, within and without Christianity, Sophia is swiftly returning to Her original Divine status. (1 +2) Many mainstream Christians, are beginning to recognize Her as the Holy Spirit from Whom emit the Seven Gifts/the Seven Spirits.

Proverbs mentions Her Seven Pillars.

As we see from the above, in many ways, it is from Sophia that comes the Seven.

In the Myth of Eurynome, She created the Seven Planetary Powers, putting a Titaness and a Titan over each. From the Primordial Feminine standpoint, Theia ruled the Sun and was given the power of illumination; Phoebe ruled the Moon and was given the power of enchantment; Dione  ruled Mars and was given the power of growth; Metis was given the planet Mercury and the power of wisdom; Themis was given the planet Jupiter and the power of law; Tethys was given the planet Venus and the power of love; and Rhea was set over the planet Saturn and given the power of peace.

In Janite thealogy, the Janati are not the actual Powers, themselves. Rather, the Janati rule over the Planetary Spheres and They were given the Powers. These Powers represent the Seven Streams of life which contain the Primordial Essence or, perhaps we could say, the quantum information which is the base of all that is manifested into reality.

We believe that like the Holy Daughter, the Janati are Immanent, meaning, though They stem from the Pleroma, They work within and throughout manifest creation. And while Dea, on one level, is Supreme and Above the All and yet She is One with us and She hears our cries, so too, the Janati, being angelic Forms of Dea, though they represent Powers beyond our ken, can hear us and help us.

We are often asked, what is the difference between a Jana and an angel?  Angels were created by God. They are not God. And so, we may pray to them in the form of asking their help and assistance. But, we may not honor them as God. We may not worship them.

The Janati are UnCreated because They are God, They are Forms of Dea and so we may pray to Them. We may honor Them as God. We may worship Them. Especially when we consider Sophia. She is Their Mother… She gave Them birth… They are of Her. They are One with Her. They are Her Seven Spirits. Her Seven Stars.

The Feast of Madria Vicka

Today is the Feast of our greatest Champion, Madria Vicka. She is known by Filianists as Sai Vikhe and She is Lady Victory in the Lucienne Tradition.

Madria Vicka is the Face of the Celestial Mother and is of the Four-Fold Earth. As a Jana ((yah-na) of the Four-Fold Earth, She is closely connected with manifest creation. As the Power of spiritual and material defense, She is often called upon for protection. Janites place Her as the Mistress and Protectress of Ekklesia and of our hestias.  Her Power is connected to Heroism.  Her main Virtues are Courage, Strength and Valor.

In our religion, we often pray that we are placed beneath Our Lady’s Mantle of Protection. When praying specifically to Madria Vicka, we ask to be placed (or our homes, Ekklesia, etc.,) beneath Her armor of Protection.

Certainly, the martial arts, military, police, fire fighters and all others who train and fight for freedom and safety are considered to be especially under Her matronage.

Sai Vikhë is the principle of discord or combat that is always inherent in manifestation: for only Heavenly things are in perfect harmony. If there were no discord, there would be no universe. However, in the Goddess Religion, all discord is but part of the Greater Harmony. War is not part of the culture centered on Goddess Spirituality, but when it is necessary to defend, the courage of Sai Vikhë comes to the fore.

Sai Vikhë as the principle of spiritual and material defence, who descends to earth when harmony (thamë) is disrupted, is perhaps best illustrated in patriarchal times by the Goddess Durga.  http://www.mother-god.com/goddess-religion.html

This feast day may be celebrated today or on any Trinity Day (Foradi, Sunnadi, Lunadi (Sat.-Mon.) as many work outside the hestia during the week. Where the feasts of the Janati are considered to be important feast days of Our Lady in Her Seven Forms, clergy shall serve the liturgy and sisters may serve the RoS in Her honor.

Roses are most appropriate offerings for Madria Vicka. The rose is both Her flower and Her Symbol. Incense: Frankincense, Dragon’s blood, Sandalwood, Rosemary, Rose, Myrrh, Copal, Benzoin.
Sacred Oil: Rose oil.

Aside from offering ritual, some devotees also choose to decorate their hestias in Her honor and offer a meal suitable for the occasion. Foods that are appropriate for this feast day would be hot, spicy foods, red berries and fruits, and red wines and beverages.

  These four angels are tracing the sign of the cross. Originally, all Christians traced the sign of the cross by first touching the forehead and then touching the right shoulder first, then the the left. Orthodox Christians trace the sign of the cross in this manner, to this day. However, eventually the Roman Catholic faithful began to copy the priest as he turned to bless them and so began to make the sign of the cross in reverse, left shoulder first. In a way, this might be considered symbolic of the differences between the mystical East and the more Scholastic West.

We trace the Fora by, touching the forehead, then touching the right shoulder, first, then the left. If we added a fifth angel who stood in the center and traced a small circle over her heart chakra, this would complete the tracing of the Fora. The Fora is the Sacred Symbol of the Season of Moura. We will be discussing the Fora in an upcoming article.

This brief post is important to read before proceeding onto the forthcoming article. It’s significance underlies the fact that Deanists are monotheaistic. And so, please bear with me if I repeat some things in this post that I’ve already stated in the past. This is basic Janite thealogy and I believe that the Lucienne Tradition would agree with most of it, as well.

We are coming to understand, more and more, how the Seven Janati (pronounce Yanati) are the Faces/Forms of Dea in addition to being Her Seven Powers, Seven Spirits, Seven Rays or Seven Aspects, although I really don’t like to use the word, aspect. I think it is misleading.

As is taught in the Tradition of our Faith, just as the white light of the sun, when passing through a prism or a droplet of water, refracts into the seven colors of the rainbow, the Supernal Light that is Dea refracts into Her Seven Faces/Powers/Spirits/Rays/Forms. Think of a diamond that has many facets, all reflecting different hues of light, and yet, it is the one diamond. And so, the sun remains the one sun, though it’s rays separate into seven colors and the diamond remains the one diamond, though its facets reflect differing hues. Just so, Dea remains the One Dea and yet, from the one droplet, from the one River, She ‘flows out’ into Seven Living Streams.

Dea begins as a Still, Dark Pool of Origin, the Fountainhead, the Great Mother. She swirls into a basin, a Font, the Celestial Mother, from there, She, as the Mother, flows and fills a Fountain till it is brimming, the Holy Daughter, Whose Graces over-flow into the world.

From the Still Dark Light of the Great Mother, Mysteria, is refracted the Indigo Ray of  Madria Rhea. We may also think of an Indigo Stream which flows out of the Pool of Origin.

From the Bright Light of the Celestial Mother, Mari, is refracted the Orange, Red and Blue Rays: Madrias Theia, Vicka and Thema.

From the Silver Light of the Holy Daughter, Kora, is refracted the Purple, Yellow and Green Rays: Madrias Candra, Sofia and Thema.

We may also think of the Janati as Living Colored Streams flowing from Their One Source.

In a recent article, we showed how the Trinitarian Janati represent the Trinity. They are the Faces or Rays of the Great Mother, the Celestial Mother and the Holy Daughter. We may take this further: Madrias Thema and Vicka are the Faces/Rays/Powers/Streams/Forms of the Celestial Mother, Mari. Madrias Grace and Sofia are the Faces/Rays/Powers/Streams/Forms of the Holy Daughter, Kora.

There is a lot of thealogy that may be developed from this, which will further our understanding and appreciation of the Janati. For now, it is important to note that in every way, in each aspect, it is always the one River, the same Water which flows in each Stream, the One Light which is refracted in all Seven Rays all of which stem the same Origin/Source, Absolute Deity, She Who is the Great Mother. In this way, Dea is One. We are monotheastic. We believe in One God Who is One and Three and Seven at one and the same time, Eternally and within Whom are contained the Female and the Male.
