Part III, Sophia, Eurynome and the Seven Janati

10 Abalon/Sept. 14

Abaldi/Thurs. Day of Madria Thame’ (Themis).

O, Madria Thame’, Jana of Justice, Order and Harmony, be with us.

~

  (The Seven Rays of Divine Manifestation.)  In Deanic language, the Seven are of the Three-Fold Heaven (3 upward: (Madrias Candre, Raya and Rhave)  and of the Four-Fold Earth (4 downward: Madrias Sushuri, Thame’, Vikhe and Mati).

~

When ArchMatrona Ghrian and I first formulated the idea that Dea is One and Three and Seven, this formula expressed both the thealogy of the One Dea in Her Tri-une Form of Mother, Daughter and Great Mother and also of the One Dea in Her Septad Form of the Seven Janati.

In our religion, we are often presented with the analogy of the prism. Just as white light flows through the prism and separates into seven colored rays, so too, the Pure Light of Dea is diffracted into Seven Intelligent Living Streams (each Stream expressing itself through a certain color.) These Seven Rays of Intelligent Light take on the form of angels.

Just as the Holy Daughter takes on the Form of Soul, and yet, She remains Dea Filia (the Divine Daughter God); so the Janati take on the form of angels, but yet, They remain Dea.

Janite Thealogy is based, in part, upon the Divine Sophia, Who is known as both Mother and Daughter in Her Tri-une Form as Mother, Daughter and Holy Soul.

Sophia is pan-cultural. She is not limited to Judaic-Christianity. Many worship Her from all religious walks of life.

As Rudolph Steiner and others have noted, Sophia is the Mother of the Seven Powers. These Seven Powers were sometimes considered to be angels although Gnosticism refers to them as Archons (which we consider a patriarchal demotion of the Sophian Myth as at the time, Gnostics did not see manifest creation in a positive light). Although archon means ruler, in Gnosticism, Archons were not the good guys.

Sophia is also known as the Goddess of Heaven and the Mother of the Stars. Even in Gnosticism, She is known as the Mother of All the Living and the Highest Ruler over the visible Universe. She is said to have shaped manifest creation based upon the heavenly prototypes and She forms the seven star circles or spheres over which the planetary powers are placed. These planetary spheres, or heavens, were, for the ancients, the highest regions of the created universe.

Considered by Steiner to be the new Isis, and, indeed, She was often equated with Isis in the past, Sophia is the Pneumatic Essence from which all souls draw their origin. In Her lower or Daughter form, She is the Mediatrix between the upper and lower realms. It is She, Who is the one Who is crowned with the Seven Stars.

More and more, within and without Christianity, Sophia is swiftly returning to Her original Divine status. (1 +2) Many mainstream Christians, are beginning to recognize Her as the Holy Spirit from Whom emit the Seven Gifts/the Seven Spirits.

Proverbs mentions Her Seven Pillars.

As we see from the above, in many ways, it is from Sophia that comes the Seven.

Related image  (Eurynome is on the far left).

In the Myth of Eurynome, She created the Seven Planetary Powers, putting a Titaness and a Titan over each. From the Primordial Feminine standpoint, Theia ruled the Sun and was given the power of illumination; Phoebe ruled the Moon and was given the power of enchantment; Dione  ruled Mars and was given the power of growth; Metis was given the planet Mercury and the power of wisdom; Themis was given the planet Jupiter and the power of law; Tethys was given the planet Venus and the power of love; and Rhea was set over the planet Saturn and given the power of peace.

In Janite thealogy, the Janati are not the actual Powers, themselves. Rather, the Janati rule over the Planetary Spheres and They were given the Powers. These Powers represent the Seven Streams of life which contain the Primordial Essence or, perhaps we could say, the quantum information which is the base of all that is manifested into reality.

We believe that like the Holy Daughter, the Janati are Immanent, meaning, though They stem from the Pleroma, They work within and throughout manifest creation. And while Dea, on one level, is Supreme and Above the All and yet She is One with us and She hears our cries, so too, the Janati, being angelic Forms of Dea, though they represent Powers beyond our ken, can hear us and help us.

We are often asked, what is the difference between a Jana and an angel?  Angels were created by God. They are not God. And so, we may pray to them in the form of asking their help and assistance. But, we may not honor them as God. We may not worship them.

The Janati are UnCreated because They are God, They are Forms of Dea and so we may pray to Them. We may honor Them as God. We may worship Them. Especially when we consider Sophia. She is Their Mother… She gave Them birth… They are of Her. They are One with Her. They are Her Seven Spirits. Her Seven Stars.

Part II: The Holy Daughter

23 Vespera/Aug. 30

Stelladi/Wed.

Day of Madria Mati-Metis (Sophia)

O, Madria Mati, Jana of Intelligence, Intuition and Wisdom, be with us.

The Shattering of the Divine Soul of the Holy Daughter was, in our interpretation, prefigured by the tearing of Her Soul by the keres.  (Chapter IV, Mythos of the Divine Maid, verse 3),

Image result for images for Lux Madriana

Dear Sisters and Devotees,

Some of this has been discussed in the past, but some of this is new. Though this is meant for the benefit of those readers and JOP members who are new to Janite thealogy and for our sisters in priestess training, I hope that all of our readers might benefit as to how Janites differ from other forms of Deanism in our view of  the Sacrifice of the Holy Daughter. Each way to understand the Cosmic Drama is but one facet of the One Sparkling Diamond of Divine Truth.

At the very beginning of our religion, before even Lux Madriana, the original teaching about Dea was that She was more of a Triple Goddess rather than an actual Trinity of three Distinct Persons. (According to what I had been told and to the best of my understanding.) She was Mari/Jana/Dark Mother (Jana probably should be pronounced Yana) and She was truly One. Interestingly enough, at the time of Christ, there was a a very popular goddess named Mari-Anna-Ishtar.

In this original Madrian thealogy, Mari was the Transcendent Celestial Mother and Jana was Mari in Her Immanent-earthly Form. (More rightly stated: heavenly-earthly Form).

It is my understanding that there was NOT the notion of a birth or of a nativity of the Holy Daughter.  Likewise, there was no idea of the Sacrificial Death of the Daughter. This latter doctrine, to my knowledge and to the best of my understanding, was not in place at the very beginning of our religion and probably would not have been looked upon with favor.

Today, Janites, as with a majority of the rest of the community, are more Trinitarian in our approach to Dea. We do believe that the Holy Daughter emanates or proceeds from the Celestial Mother and this, in earthly terms, may be thought of as a birth (janana) or nativity. And we do accept a Sacrificial Daughter. But, we, as Janites, differ in our approach to and interpretation of the Mythos of the Sacrificial Daughter than perhaps other Traditions within our religion.

The inspiration for the Passion of the Holy Daughter, in our scriptures, is based upon the Myth of the Descent of Inanna, which was the name given the Holy Daughter in the scriptures.

While the goddess Inanna was a goddess of promiscuous sex and war; and one who did not die for altruistic reasons; it is easy to understand why her passion mythos was chosen as a metaphor for the Death of the Daughter in our scriptures. Inanna descended down through the Seven Realms (1), which caused Her great suffering and She was hung on a tree which , in our scriptures, represents the world/axis/tree. All of this has a great and deep meaning and is certainly one way to contemplate the Great Cosmic Sacrifice. One thing that I have always loved about the Mythos of the Divine Maid is how the Celestial Mother smashes through the Gates of Hell to save Her Daughter and to resurrect Her as depicted in the imagery of Persephone and Demeter.

Janites take a different approach to the Sacrificial Mythos. We believe that Dea cannot separate Herself from Herself without destroying Her Eternal One-ness, Her Eternal Essential Nature. We also believe that a Person of the Trinity cannot give up Her Spirit because the Spirit of the Trinity is One. There is only One Spirit in the Godhead. It cannot be separated or given up for any reason without destroying Her Eternal Essence.

Furthermore, we believe that the  Eternal Spirit of a Person of the Trinity cannot absolutely die without the Person ceasing to be the Eternal God. We do not believe that the spirit, any spirit, can die. I am not familiar with other religions which teach that it is possible for a spirit to die, to be completely annihilated. The Spirit is the Eternal Nature of God and the spirit is our own eternal nature. So, Janites do not believe in the actual Death of the Spirit of the Daughter or of the Daughter, per se.

In summary of the above:

  1. The Daughter cannot be separated, even for a single instant, from Her Mother or They would cease to be eternally One.
  2. The God-self of the Holy Daughter cannot be taken from Her or She would cease to be Eternally God.
  3. The Spirit of God, even of the Holy Daughter, cannot die, cannot be completely annihilated for that is not possible. The spirit cannot die.
  4. The entire Nature of God, God’s Oneness, God’s Spirit, the God-self of the Daughter is Eternal, without ever ceasing.

In the case of Jesus within Christianity, his human body died, yes, but his eternal spirit, his God-self did not die. In Christianity, he incarnated as an human, but he was still God. He was both God and man. His man-self died; his God-self did not die.

While the Holy Daughter took on the Form of Soul (which the keres ripped with their talons in the Mythos: Chapter IV, Mythos of the Divine Maid, verse 3), She did not have a body.

So, rather than making use of the Mythos of Inanna to represent the Cosmic story of the Sacrifice of the Holy Daughter, we apply the non-Patriarchal Mythos of the Descent of Holy Sophia, Who, it is becoming recognized by many mainstream Christians, is a part of the Godhead. She is Mother and Daughter. And there are many who recognize Holy Sophia as the Divine Feminine Trinity of Mother, Daughter and Holy Soul.

As with the Shekinah, there was an Higher Sophia who was called by Gnostics, Barbelo and there was Lower Sophia, the Daughter.

In Sophian Mythos, the Daughter, Sophia. leaves Her Mother and suffers a painful Descent down through the Realms which causes a Shattering of Her Soul. Janite refer to this Mystery as Quassare, which means, to shatter.

This Shattering of the Most Holy Soul of Sophia gave birth to our own Souls which makes it possible for us to come into manifestation. The Holy Sophia literally shares with us, Her very Soul and so we are One with Her. This is the Passion Mythos that Janites use to contemplate the Divine Mystery of the Sacrificial Daughter, which was, in our interpretation, prefigured by the tearing of Her Soul by the keres in our scriptures.

Image result for Sophia Mother, Daughter and Holy Soul Sophia, Peace Through Wisdom by Pamela Matthews.

When the Shekinah/Holy  Sophia rise, in each of Their Mythos, They become the World Soul, the Cosmic Soul. Patriarchy will say that Sophia was trapped here. That is a demotion and a belittling of what She has done for us. It is a denial of Her Divine sovereignty and in typical Patriarchal fashion, makes Her dependent upon Her consort for salvation when it is actually, She, Who is our Salvation, our Soteria.

And so this, we believe of the Holy Daughter. That She is the Holy World/Cosmic Soul and our Soul. This is how She rules and sustains all of Nature through Her Sacrificial Love. She truly remains here with us, as the World Soul, until She can gather up the very last Divine Spark within us unto Assumption into Perfect Union with Her Divine Mother. When She rises, we rise with Her. All in the Eternal Cosmic Wheel of time outside of time.

As it is said of the Holy Daughter in the teachings of our religion, where these are Cosmic and not historical events, each is always taking place, eternally. When we observe each feast day, we should observe it as if it is taking place right now. We should observe it with deep reverence and profound gratitude.

  (Sophia, Goddess of Wisdom).

And so, the Holy Daughter Eternally Descends in the Omni-Present Now. The Soul of the Holy Daughter Eternally Shatters in the Omni-Present Now. The Holy Daughter Eternally rises in the Omni-Present Now.

It is said of the Shekinah, that She is always descending and rising. Christianity has a similar teaching of the Eternal nature of the Sacrifice, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus…that these are Eternal Events outside of time.

The graces and blessings of these events are brought into time, both in the Christian liturgies and in the Madrian/Janite Great Liturgy, through the Mystery of the Communion Rite.

It is because we live in such ultimate, intimate union with the Holy Daughter that there is nothing that we experience that She does not experience with us, down to the very last breath of our lives and through the first Light of the assumption of our souls.

Blessed be God, the Holy Daughter. Blessed is She.

Coming up, Part III, the Seven Janati.

ArchMadria Candra Sophia.

  1. There were many underground cities at that time and in that area. These cities contained many levels and some were capable of sustaining upwards of 20,000 people. Archaeologists are continuing to find many of these massive underground cities which had methods of plumbing, channeling fresh air, etc. More and more, archaeologists are discovering that what was once thought of as pure myths, had a basis in historical fact.

The Meaning of the Day of Kala from a Janite Perspective.

16 Columbina/April 4

~

Madria Erin, in her most engaging and thoughtful post on Lustration/Kala, asked the question, what is the full thealogy of the day, if the Daughter is not dead?

Our Scriptures teach that the Holy Daughter suffered a torturous Descent down through the Realms before Her Death. These scriptural verses, taken altogether, are seemingly inspired by the Mythos of Inanna, Persephone, and the Passion of the Christ. Our scriptures continue with the story of how after Her death, the Holy One went to the deepest, darkest realms in order to carry the Light of the Mother to every corner of existence. (Jesus was said to have descended into hell, after death, to free the souls waiting there. Persephone, of course, spent six months in Hades.) On the Holy Feast of Eastre, as evidenced in the Mythos of Persephone, the Daughter was rescued and resurrected by Her Mother.

And though, I cannot speak for Filianists, I would assume that Kala is spent in the remembrance of the Passion and Death of the Holy Daughter. (We must keep in mind that there were many dead and resurrecting pre-Christian gods. This timeless myth extends thousands of years B. C.)

There is an hauntingly beautiful Filianic lament in honor of Mari-Anna that is often chanted on this day. {Anna is the name of the Holy Daughter in Filianic Tradition. Though it is said to come from the name Hannah, it also stems from Inanna and Jana as in Di-Jana or Di-Anna. (Jana is correctly pronounced Yanna}.

We must also be mindful of the fact that the name, Demeter, translates to God the Mother and Persephone (per seph o nay), before Her Descent into Hades, was called Kore (Kor-eh or Kora), which means the Maid/Maiden or Daughter. It was after the Divine Kora returned to the Earth from the Underworld that She was called Persephone. (1)

I and both of my bishops, believe that the Eleusinian Mysteries, served in honor of Demeter/Persephone, were truly based upon the Divine Mother and Daughter.

These ancient rites were liturgical in nature and had a Divine Communion Rite. The Eluesinian Mysteries were based on a Mother-God and Daughter-God Who were separated, the Daughter descended into hell, and Her resurrection was celebrated, annually.  During this Rite, devotees truly believed that they were receiving the Body of Demeter,’ God the Mother’,  through the Communion Bread.

The deeply meaningful and mystical Communion Rite of the original Madrian liturgy, part of which is to be found in our scriptures, was inspired by the Myth of Persephone. Though Persephone did not die, per se; rather, She was trapped in the underworld where Her Mother shattered the gates of Hades in order to rescue Her; this Mythos may be considered symbolic of a death and resurrection. Certainly, the resurrection of all life on Earth followed the return of Persephone from the under-world.

In Sophian Tradition, there is also a Communion Rite that may be based upon Proverbs.

Just as Filianists and other Matriarchal scholars have managed to discover the pre-Patriarchal roots of many Goddess-based myths, in Janite Tradition, the Cosmic Drama of the Holy Daughter is founded upon the pre-Patriarchal Mythos of Sophia/Shekinah (see http://www.suppressedhistories.net/articles/GnosticGoddessFallenSophia.pdf).

The Divine Sophia is pan-religious, meaning, She is not confined to one religion. She is actually pre-Christian and all may worship Her. She is the Image/Form that Janites use for the Holy Daughter. Included in the Mythos of Shekinah/Sophia is the Divine Shattering.

Sources for this Myth of the Divine Shattering of Shekinah/Sophia may be found within certain traditions of Kabbalism, in Gnostic schools of thought and in ancient Syrian Gnostic Christianity.

In Kabbalism, this Descent is not considered to be the punishment it is in Gnostic Christianity; it is a voluntary act on the part of Lower (meaning immanent—so Daughter-Form) Shekinah out of Her love for the Children of Israel and this Descent through lower-vibrational density resulted in the Shattering of Her Soul.

Unlike Kabbalism, the Christian Sophian Tradition, unfortunately, blames this Shattering on a mistake that Sophia supposedly made by trying to create without Her Male Partner. We, and many modern Christians and Sophian devotees, do not accept this Patriarchal view of Lower (again, meaning immanent-so Daughter-Form) Sophia. She is said, in ancient sources, to always do the will of Her Mother (Higher Sophia) and so, She descended down through the Realms, like the Shekinah (they are One and the same Being) to be immanent with the Children of the Earth, but this torturous Descent down through the ever increasingly denser and darker dimensions eventually caused Her Soul to Shatter. This Shattering, as taught in Shekinan/Sophian Mythos, did not cause Her death, rather, it caused Her to become the World Soul or the Holy Soul of the World (of all of us and all of Nature).

In contrast to the Mythos of Persephone, the Divine Sophia is not saved by Her Mother. Rather, She, like Quan Yin, chooses to remain immanent with us. She becomes an integral Part of us, to unite as One Being with us, until the day we desire nothing but Perfect Love and so at that ending of the time of our Soul Journey, She ascends with us, assuming our souls unto the Celestial Mother in the Heavenly Realm of Bliss, the Pleroma, our True Home.

I picture the Divine Shattering of the Holy Daughter like an hologram that has been shattered into a million pieces. Each shattered piece (us) is still a reflection of the Whole and yet, the Core of the Original Wholeness is still intact because the Holy Daughter is God and God cannot disintegrate. She cannot die.

The Holy Daughter is like the Central Piece of the Original Hologram. Though the fragile, rarefied outward pieces of the Daughter’s Soul was Shattered (and Sophia is said to have had a rarefied Body—Soul), Her Essence, Her Spirit, did not, could not, shatter, disintegrate. Thus, the Original Immanent Image of the Celestial Mother, She Who is the Holy Daughter, was Shattered, and yet, remained Whole in an of Herself and we, Her Divine Sparks, each were ensouled with Her Soul. She is the Soul of our souls and the Spirit of the Divine Sparks within us. This is the Divine Mystery of the Feasts of Moura and Eastre in the Janite Tradition.

Returning to the holographic analogy: As found in Stanislav Grof’s,  the Holotropic Mind: ‘Unlike normal photographs, every portion of a piece of holographic film contains all the information of the whole. Thus if a piece of a holographic plate is broken into fragments, each piece can still be used to reconstruct the entire image.’

To reconstruct the entire image. That is why Sophia, the Holy Daughter, seeks the Sparks within us, so that She may recreate the Original Image and render us back into that Perfect Hologram in order to reunite us with the Celestial Mother, the Origin of the Image.

But, just as with the brain, where the whole is carried in the part— as the brain is damaged or sections removed, the more it is cut up, the more the memory, though it remains intact, becomes fuzzy, just so, an hologram becomes fuzzier the more it is shattered. Thus, we of the Shattered One are but imperfect, fuzzy reflections of the Divine Daughter, Who is the Immanent Image of the Celestial Mother, Who, in turn, Who comes from the Source, the Great Mother and so we must seek, through Her Grace and Her Sacraments (2) to become ever more perfect reflections of Her. And, we do so out of love of Dea, and, as our scriptures teach, out of love for Her children. We do so by striving through every thought, word and action to draw ever closer to the Holy One rather than retreating further away from Her.

 Green Sophia, by Daniel Mirante, contributing artist to the Artists Envisioning the Divine project.

To summarize: In Her desire to be immanent with us, we who are the Children of the Earth/the Children of Dea, after our fall into density, the painful Descent through the denser, lower vibrational Realms proved to be too much for the delicate, rarefied Soul-Body of the Holy Daughter, one which was not protected by a material body and so, it Shattered. We became One in Soul with the Holy Daughter. We contain souls that were given to us out of Her Sacrifice; we contain within our souls Her Divine Sparks.

In Kabbalistic teaching: The Shekinah plays another very important role in the story of creation, and in particular in the Great Plan of humankind.  It is believed that in man’s fall to a denser, less perfect state of being in the physical, the Shekinah stayed with us as we separated from God or were exiled from the ‘Garden’.  Thus, the Shekinah, once again, was voluntarily removed from God/En Sof in order for us to have our experience.  She has always stayed with us, wherever we were exiled or isolated or shut out, the Shekinah was always there in exile and isolation with us. http://www.universalkabbalah.net/Shekinah.

On the day of Lustration (Kala in the Auroran and Filianic Traditions), Janites spend a day in somber remembrance of this greatest, most heart-rending, soul wrenching, sacrificial myrrh-infused, stopped moment out of time when all the Cosmos holds its breath; the  most knee-bowing, head-veiling, thunderstruck, awestruck, Shining Being witnessed, Ultimate, Primordial Love Sacrifice of the Most Pure and Holy Daughter. She literally gave Herself to us. And, She never left us. She stayed.

In this way, She lives every single moment of every single day with us. Whether we are in pain; whether we experience joy; whether we glory in love or suffer abandonment, She is literally part of us and we of Her and so, She experiences exactly as we do with all our pain, emotions and bliss.

This is the full thealogy of the day of Kala in the Janite Tradition.

Janites practice the ancient rite of lustration/purification and veil in solemn observance of Her Descent and Shattering on the day of Lustration, 28 Moura/March 19 (if not a leap year).

May the Queen of Heaven, She Who is the Divine Shattered One; She Who is the Holy Soul of the World; She Who is the Queen of Heaven, bless you and be with you. Blessed is She.

  1. The meaning behind Persephone is a little bit of a mystery. It could derive from the Greek pertho (“to destroy”) or from phone (“murder”). She may be a Greek and Roman goddess, but that doesn’t prove that her name comes from either language. In fact, the multiple spellings of her name in ancient sources suggest that the Greeks found her name difficult to pronounce, which would suggest that it was foreign to them. Some historians believe that worship of her, as well as her mother Demeter, predate the Olympian pantheon. http://bewitchingnames.blogspot.com/2012/10/persephone.html. (Though this is the most common guessed meaning of Persephone, there are those who believe it may mean She Who lightens the darkness.)

Feast of Carmentalia/Bits and Pieces I

21 Hestia/Jan. 15

Feast of Carmentalia

Sunnadi/Sunday

b060dc171aba3230aebd4c62202b8a02

O, Madria Theia, Jana of Illumination, Joy and Benevolence, be with us. May the Pure Stream of Your Virtues flow within me, in this world and in all the worlds to come.

~

Today is the Feast of Carmentalia. Carmentalia was known as ‘The Woman’s Festival” as Carmenta was known as the goddess of women. Here is a good article on it with a nice prayer:

http://www.patheos.com/blogs/religioromana/2013/01/carmentalia-the-womens-festival/. Please note that this article is using the Julian calendar. There were originally two feast days, Jan. 11 and 15.

~

We have two guest articles today. We begin with an offering for Vespers by ArchMadria Kathi. I have added the Hail, Mysteria prayer, so that I can substitute Madria Kathi’s version for our Evensong Rite. This will be posted in our Prayers and Rites drop-down menu under Evensong. Thank you, ArchMadria Kathi.

We end today’s Bits and Pieces with an historical fashion article by Sorella Shoshana. Thank you, Sorella Shoshana.

Vespers Ceremony by ArchMadria Kathi

I wrote this Janite Rite as an optional “Vespers” ceremony. Although I work at an ‘outside’ job inside my home, I sometimes find myself at the end of the day having only had a few moments for morning prayer, and so busy during the day that by 5 p.m., the day has just flown by with no opportunity for true spiritual expression. This Rite may suffice for those of us who want to wind down at the end of the day and refocus our attention. It also helps to move from one mode of thinking (our daily work) to tending our sacred Hearths and homes, with loving gratitude.

Twilight Rite

In the evening after finishing with the day’s activities, before moving into the evening, light candles and incense.

Trace the Fora upon yourself while saying:

In the Name of the Mother, and of the Daughter, and the Great Mother. Blessed is She.

Begin with:

Blessed is Our Mother God,

She Who is Mari,

She Who is Kora,

She Who is Mysteria,

Blessed is She.

or

Blessed is Our Mother God, the Holy One.

She Who is the Celestial Mother.

She Who is the Holy Daughter.

She Who is the Great Mother.

Blessed is She.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

O Celestial Mother Mari, O Holy Daughter Kora, O Great Mother of Mystery

As we move into the peaceful night

We are grateful for the works of our hands and our hearts

May we bless our loved ones, and our Sacred Hestias

as You have blessed us this day.

Gather us into the folds of Your Mighty Mantle, Madria Dea

Kindle in us Your gentle light, Beloved Kyria

Comfort us in the darkness, Great Mother

And May the Seven Janati be with us this night

Blessed be the Holy Ones.

Hail, Mysteria, Fountainhead of Grace, glory be to Thee. Blessed art Thou, O, Empress of Heaven, and blessed are the Beloved Mother and Daughter. Holy Dea, Great Mother God, bless us, Thy children, now and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

.

Optional: Scripture reading or Rosaries, as desired.

Silver Light of the Forests

Silver Light of the darkling forests, send us forth in the protection of Your Spirit that no profane thing may enter into us.

Grant us to see all things with delight that are lovely and to glory and increase in force and energy.

Fill us with wonder in the sight of the seas and of the heavens and of every place wherein You are.

Commander of the roaring wave, help us to turn from all that is low or inglorious neither with anger nor with pain, but to know that in You we stand above all such things.

Guiding Light of the faithful soul, fill the deepest caverns of our spirit with the exhilaration of Your love. Send us forth upon the world as torchbearers of Your delight and grant us strength in You and in ourselves that we may value all things rightly, regardless of the consuming weight of the profane and the frailty of all that is beautiful.

Closing

The Prayer of Eternity

Eternal is the Light of the Mother.
Eternal is the Love of the Daughter.
Eternal is the Life of the Great Mother.
Glorious is Eternity of Dea.

Let us bless the Holy One.
Blessed is She.

Let us thank the Seven Janati of Power.
Thanks be to the Seven Janati.

Trace the Fora upon yourself and say: In the Name of the Mother, and of the Daughter, and the Great Mother. Blessed is She.

A change in the calendar: As it happens, I blessed my son’s house on the day of the Full Blessing Moon. This ended up being so powerful, I am changing the day of the Blessing of the Hestia to the day/night of the Full Blessing Moon.

~

Janite Deanics observe three main prayer times of the day in honor of the Divine Feminine Trinity. Aurora (meaning Dawn) is in honor of the Holy Daughter. Janites model the Holy Daughter on the Divine Sophia/Shekinah. Noon-tide is in honor of the Celestial Mother (modeled on Higher Sophia/Shekinah) and Evensong celebrates the Great Mother (the Monas/Absolute Deity).

~

Each Person of the Divine Feminine Trinity has a royal Title:

Holy Daughter Kore: Queen of Heaven.

Celestial Mother Mari: High Queen of Heaven.

Great Mother Mysteria: Empress of Heaven.

As Janites, we have traditional endings to our prayers. This is a very powerful cementing of a religious foundation and it provides synchronicity and continuity for the Faith. You find this in other religions as well, especially within Catholic and Orthodox Christianity.

Perhaps even more so than other forms of Deanism, Janites (as well as the Lucienne Tradition) are very highly Trinitarian focused. This is reflected in our three main prayer times.

And so, during Aurora, in honor of the Holy Daughter, we include the full Hail, Kore prayer and we end our prayers with: Let us bless the Queen of Heaven. Blessed is She, etc.

During Noontide, in honor of the Celestial Mother, we pray the full Hail, Mari prayer and we end with, let us bless the High Queen of Heaven, etc.. (Noontide is purposefully short so that people may pray during lunch hour at work.)

During Evensong, in honor of the Great Mother, we pray the full Hail, Mysteria prayer and end with, let us bless the Empress of Heaven, Blessed is She etc.

However, when we are praying a general prayer where we are not praying specifically to a Person of the Trinity, such as after a rosary, the Rite of Sacrifice, the liturgy, etc., we wish to honor the Trinity as One and so we say: Let us bless the Holy One. Blessed be Dea. I will be making this changes in our Prayer Rites.

Honoring Nature:

Nature is a very important aspect of our Faith. Where we are moving to our camp on the lake, I have begun to take an interest in the local plants and wildlife. I am incorporating lake themes and local plants into my home decor. For example, we have wild irises growing along the shoreline and I was fortunate enough to find plates, a tea pot and other items painted with wild irises. We have an owl that comes to our yard every evening and so I found a wonderful owl clock. We have hundreds of beautiful waterlilies in the lake each year and so I found another clock with waterlilies. These are just some of the ideas I have had in incorporating the wildlife that I love outdoors, into my home to honor them. There are many other ideas that I am using, as well.

In Cordova, Alaska, my son’s fiance works in a shop called The Net Loft. http://thenetloftak.com/. There, they use only good yarns and they are all hand-dyed from plants, lichen, berries and mushrooms! She recently gifted me with some of the yarn and the colors are far, far more vibrant than those that are synthetically dyed. Their tradition is that local meaning is incorporated into the colors of the yarns and also, the patterns. Their Gansey sweater project incorporates patterns that are symbolic of the person or the area along with ‘Cordova colors’. You find this local pride symbolized in many areas of their life. It helps you to truly appreciate where you live in a more traditional village sense. Even if you live in a big city, you can find local plants, trees and the native meaning of your area.

Another nice thing to do is to find out what plants are native to your area and grow some more. I will be planting a wild flower meadow with flowers that are native to my area. I have also been researching local medicinal  and edible plants and was astonished to find that many plants that I have known all my life, that I thought were ‘weeds’ (my sister, a master gardener, says there is no such thing as ‘weeds’. I agree with her) are either edible or medicinal. (Always be careful, many plants are quite poisonous.)

It’s also nice to research your local waterways, even brooks and creeks and learn the constellations above your head!

Nature isn’t just about ‘casting spells for magick’; Nature is part of us and we are part of Nature. Nowadays, people are becoming more and more divorced from Nature, which is not healthy for either our bodies or our souls.

Many think that just because plants don’t have brains or physiology similar to humans and animals, that they are essentially non-conscious, but many are finding out, otherwise. We, ourselves, have to remember that our consciousness does not reside in our brains.

Though still controversial, remember back to when you were a child and how you experienced plants and trees.

FAQ The Holy Soul Part III

Foradi, 13 Astrea

sophia (Sophia, Goddess of Wisdom)

As with all the articles on this blog, these writings reflect the beliefs of the Janite Order of Priestesses and do not necessarily reflect the beliefs of the Greater Deanic Traditions. If you can get through to the end, well, I hope the end surprises you. Honestly, it kind of surprised me. This is such a complex subject, but it came together in the end. Thanks be to Madria Sofia.

Blue text is commentary by ArchMadria Pamela.

~

As I was researching this article, I found a Deanic doctrine within Gnostic teachings: The motive for the Sophia’s fall was defined according to the Anatolian school to have lain therein, that by Her desire to know what lay beyond the limits of the knowable, She had brought Herself into a state of ignorance and formlessness. Her suffering extends to the whole Pleroma.

The Myth of Sophia is often synonymous with the story of our souls.

In the above paragraph, we read about why we are here, ‘because we desired to know what lay beyond the limits of the knowable’ and by this, we brought ourselves into limitation, suffering and ignorance. Through this limitation and suffering, our souls will evolve until we desire nothing but Perfect Love. This is exactly what is taught in the longer version of the Madrian Creed.

The Holy Daughter suffered an excruciating Descent down through the Seven Realms. The Divine Sophia/Shekinah also suffered an excruciating Descent down through the Realms. The reason this caused Her immense suffering is because of the greater and greater density of each realm and the further and further away from the Pleroma She descended.

a48_1

The Most Pure Holy Daughter suffered this Descent in order to remain with us, here in exile, reminiscent of the sacrifice of Quan Yin, who chose to remain behind until the last cry of humanity was heard. This is part of the Primary Sacrifice of the Holy Daughter within the JOP, that She sacrificed Her Place in the Pleroma in order to remain intimately bound with us, while we are here, in exile. She remains with us as the Holy Soul.

Some Patriarchal myths diminish the scope of this Holy Sacrifice by stating that this was a punishment or that She (Sophia) was ‘trapped’ here. (Similar to Persephone being trapped in the Underworld for the Winter.). Yet again, these misogynist notions are a continuation of the blaming of the female/Female for the ‘Fall of Humanity’ and the ‘fallen state of Creation’. These outmoded ideas are slowly falling by the wayside (no pun intended) in our modern Age.

(Here is another article concerning Her demotion:  http://www.sophiaandthedragon.com/sophia/soul_of_world.html.)

But here is an example of Her voluntary sacrifice:

It is believed that in man’s fall to a denser, less perfect state of being in the physical, the Shekinah stayed with us as we separated from God or were exiled from the ‘Garden‘.  Thus, the Shekinah, once again, was voluntarily removed from God/En Sof in order for us to have our experience.  She has always stayed with us, wherever we were exiled or isolated or shut out, the Shekinah was always there in exile and isolation with us. http://www.universalkabbalah.net/Shekinah

I just discovered that the Shekinah, like the Holy Daughter in the Deanic Faith, is known as the Moon Who reflects the Divine Light into the World. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shekhinah   🙂

world-soul Goddess Sophia (I love this image, because for Deanics it shows the symbol of the Supernal Sun and the Supernal Moon and the Rainbow colors of the Seven Janati. )

What exactly do we mean by saying that Sophia/Shekinah is the World Soul? Some of a New Age perspective, will state that She is Gaia, others believe the Earth is Her Body. Some say She is Mother Earth.

The following is, what I think the best definition of Sophia as the World Soul as written by an Episcopalian Priest:

As the living centre or Soul of all creatures […] She includes the manifoldness of living souls; She is all of humanity together in one, or the Soul of the World. She is ideal humanity, containing all individual living creatures or souls and uniting them through Herself […]. Her task is to mediate and unify the manifoldness of living creatures, who constitute the actual content of Her life and the absolute unity of God.

She contains all living creatures, She is the unity that binds them, and Her work in the world is to unify outwardly that which is already one in essence—in Her. (Episcopal Priest, Father Matthew Wright.) (1)

And so, She is the Soul of All.

Sophia herself is but a reflex of the “Mother of all living” and is therefore also called “Mother.” She is the formatrix of heaven and earth, for as much as mere matter can only receive form through the light which, coming down from above has interpenetrated the dark waters of the hylē; but she is also at the same time the spiritual principle of life in creation, or, as the world-soul the representative of all that is truly pneumatic in this lower world: her fates and experiences represent typically those of the pneumatic soul which has sunk down into chaos. (Rather, She shares with us, as is said about the Shekinah, everything that we experience.)

Invoking Shekinah Invoking the Shekinah by /Shiloh Sophia

Invoking Shekinah

Here again, the Shekinah plays a very special and multi-faceted role in the Kabbalistic teachings.  For, it is the Shekinah that is ascribed by Kabbalists to be the Middle Pillar of Balance that unites the opposites, just as the soul allows for the opposites of body and spirit to unite, so too does the Shekinah play this role for us.  Indeed, the Shekinah is the Soul of Humanity, what Kabbalists call the Neshamah, for She has given a portion of Herself in order for each human to come into being in this world.  In giving of Herself to humans, in this state of physical density and isolation, the World Soul becomes shattered. This shattering can be metaphorically grasped in considering what might happen to a glass alembic or flask when too much pressure is put upon in the alchemical works.  Thus, the Shekinah represents the ultimate archetype of selfless sacrifice.  All Her sacrifices have been for the benefit of creation so that humankind may experience this life in order to fulfill its destiny and purpose.  Kabbalists, therefore, pay great respect and gratitude to the Shekinah for Her sacrifice and service by taking up the mantle or the quest to reunite the Shekinah with the Creator.

http://www.universalkabbalah.net/Shekinah

From Russian religious thought we read: Sophia splintered Her Divine Light and placed one spark of it into each human being, thereby Herself becoming the Anima Mundi, the Soul of the World. Here, it is voluntary.

In summary:

From the above descriptions of the Holy or World Soul, we do not see the New Age or neo-Pagan idea of our sister, the Earth as being Mother Goddess or the Body of Sophia. Rather, we see Sophia/Shekinah, as the Holy Soul, intimately intertwined with every single one of us, every single soul, like a giant mandala of souls that has One Still Centre Point.

After the suffering of Descent and Her voluntary exile here to remain with us, the Holy Daughter gave of Herself to us to the point where She, Herself was Shattered. Through the Shattering came the scattering of Her Divine Sparks, which now reside in the hidden chamber of our hearts, and a sharing of a Portion of Her Soul, with all of us. With Her children.

Sophia and humanity are so unified through Soul and through Spirit, that the tale of the Soul became the Tale of Sophia. She will never leave us until all of Her Divine Sparks are gathered and restored to the Pleroma.  There is no greater Love than this. Blessed is She.

As coming from above, she is herself of pneumatic essence, the mētēr phōteinē (Epiph. 40, 2) or the anō dynamis (Epiph. 39, 2) from which all pneumatic souls draw their origin.

Yesterday, in Part I of FAQ/Soul/Spirit,  I explained some of the reasons why the Janite Order of Priestesses has chosen the Divine Sophia (and, in part, the Holy Shekinah) as Images/Forms for the Most Pure Daughter rather than the goddess Inanna. Today, we will also show that in our scriptures and liturgy, Persephone was also used as an Image/Form of the Holy Daughter. In exploring the further Deanic significance of the Divine Name, Kore, a name for Persephone before She was married to Hades, it will be demonstrated that there is a tie between Sophia as Form/Image of the Daughter and the Divine Maid.

It is truly important to have a fundamental understanding of Sophia in order to understand The Holy Daughter, Kore, as the Holy Soul. There is so much to say about Sophia, if we strip away the Patriarchal elements, but even Patriarchy could not conceal the entire truth about Her!

She has appeared, in great visions, to Russian and Russian Orthodox philosophers who identified Her as Wisdom, the Lady Wisdom.

xindian-triple-goddess-jpg-pagespeed-ic-lkf2hhnywj

Outside of Shaktism, which is one of the four main Traditions of Hinduism and whose worship is centered upon the Divine Feminine Trinity as Supreme, only Sophia/Shekinah is credited with all of the following (and so much more): She is called the Primordial Light of Creation and the Cosmic Womb. She is said to have created the Cosmos. “She is the formatrix of heaven and earth.” She is placed over the Seven Planetary Powers; She is the Mother of the Seven HousesShe is both Mother and Daughter (Barbelo/Sophia, Higher/Lower Sophia, Higher/Lower Shekinah, Mother Sige and Daughter Sophia) and She is also Trinity: Mother, Daughter and Holy Soul. She is said to be the Matrix and the Ground of All Being. (Yes, this latter is said of Sophia/Shekinah.) In modern times She is known as the ‘Goddess of Re-Birth’.

We must always remember that when Wisdom is personified in the bible, the word Wisdom translates into the Greek, Sophia. (The Septuagint was a Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures. The Latin for Wisdom is Sapientia.) We must also keep in mind that some of the Hebrew Scriptures have teachings that were adapted from the Zoroastrians and the Egyptians. The NT also contains both Egyptian and Jewish teachings. And, most people are aware that much of Christianity incorporated elements from Classical and Celtic Paganism. In other words, every religion incorporates from that which preceded them. That is why there is a Sacred Thread, a Core Truth, that runs through all religions.

Furthermore, as the Perfect Image/Form of the Holy Daughter,  Sophia is said to be the Daughter of Light. She is Wisdom and the Daughter of Wisdom.  In Proverbs, She offers us the Wine She has mixed and the Bread She has made and so She is acting as High Priestess. She descended through the Seven Realms and is said to sustain all of Creation. She takes on rarefied Form. She is said to be of God-Nature. She is said to be the Divine Maid. She is said to sustain all of Creation. She is said to be the Divine Spark within us and that She suffered through a painful Descent through the Seven Realms in order to remain with us. From Her, we receive our souls. She is said to be the World Soul or the Holy Soul.

 There is so, so much more to be said of the Divine Sophia/Shekinah, Who else, in our Age, is more Perfect as the Image and Form of the Most Pure Holy Daughter?

What separates us from modern neo-Paganism, though we have more of a Pagan culture, is that we understand the Divine Feminine Trinity to be God, not a goddess. In our era, there is a difference between the two. And, this is what the Deanic Faith has always taught: Dea is God. She is our Mother God.

In returning to Sophia, we have to remember that we have every right to divorce Sophia from Patriarchal demotion and to restore Her to Her True place, just as our fore-mothers in the Faith did with their Forms and Images of Dea.

The Deanic Faith worships the Divine Feminine as being God in Her Own right. She is not God because She is the Spouse of the Father, She is God because She is Primary, She is Source, She is Supreme, She is the Ground of All Being, She is Primordial and She is of God-Nature. She is God because She is God. Pure and Simple.

But, there is one more upon whom the Holy Daughter is modeled in our Faith from whence the Janites take the Name, Kore.

In addition to the goddess, Inanna, the Mythos and the original Madrian liturgy also modeled the Holy Daughter on Persephone, who, before being forced into marriage by Hades, was known as Kore, which was the Greek for Maid or Maiden. The title of Her Mythos in our scriptures is the Mythos of the Divine Maid, meaning in translation of the word, maid: the Mythos of the Divine Kore. Some of the Persephonian (so to speak) verses in Her Mythos are to be found in the Communion Rite of both the original Madrian and in the Janite liturgy.

This is why the JOP has chosen the name Kore for the Holy Daughter. It was felt that it was the most fitting Name for the Most Pure Daughter as She is the Divine Maid.

(As an aside: The beginning of the following article is interesting and shows that the use of the term, Mistress in our scriptures is right and proper and is equated with Persephone: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potnia.)

Today, I will begin to explain the Holy Daughter as the Holy Soul and we must always keep in mind that Sophia is ultimately pre-Christian and Her worship is pan-religious. One does not have to be Christian in order to worship Her. She is also believed, by many to be Isis (Isis-Sophia.)

Sophia-Goddess-of-Wisdom-with-chalice (Sophia, Goddess of Wisdom with Chalice.)

We (the Janite Order) probably do not understand the Holy Daughter to be a sacrificial saviouress in the same manner as the scriptures might seem to indicate. Nor is She a savior in the sense that Christians consider Jesus to be. We are not saved from a Primordial fault or from a type of original sin, or of a will-full turning away from the Holy Mother. (Please see the long form of the Creed which was discovered in the original liturgy. It may be found under our Prayers and Rites section of the menu.) The Catechism describes this as an evil act, on our part. We reject this thealogy and that part of the Catechism has been removed.

There has been enough suffering of females over the last 2-3,000 years, as a result of blaming a first female for the Fall of humankind. When the Gnostic Christians tried to blame Sophia for creating the demi-urge, it was a re-blaming of the Female all over again, just like they blamed the Mother of all the Living, Eve, for ‘original sin’ and for causing the ‘male to sin’. How different the notion of the ‘Fallen Sophia” is than this Gnostic text: Sophia was born from the Primordial Female Power, Sige (or Silence, the Gnostic Goddess Sige) and that She was God’s Mother, ‘the Great revered Virgin in Whom the Father was concealed from the beginning.’

The JOP categorically rejects any notion of original sin no matter under what mythos it is couched or how it is ultimately explained. And we further reject any Patriarchal idea of a Fallen Sophia Who needed a male savior.

Thankfully, in our Age, many are discarding the outdated notion of the Fallen Sophia. Many understand Her to be Mother/Daughter and Holy Soul; the Christian Holy Spirit; or that She incarnated as Jesus or Mary Magdalene, or  She is understood as the Divine Goddess of Wisdom. There is a long-standing Tradition in Russian Orthodoxy that Mary of Nazareth was the incarnation of Sophia. And, yet, many others see Her as we do, in Her Primary/Primordial Form of being Divine in Her Own Right.

How does all of this relate to the Holy Daughter as Soul and our souls?

We, our True Selves, chose to come here in order to learn life and soul lessons that we could not learn as pure spirits. As the long form of the Madrian Creed indicates, we had a desire to learn what lay outside of Perfection. Our Divine Mother, through Her Sovereign Will, honored our sovereign will and so created manifested reality for us. The problem is, we forget why we are here. We forget who we really are. We have forgotten our True Home and so, as in the Hymn of the Pearl, we must remember and find our way back Home. We must also evolve our souls into perfect love so that we may eternally abide in Perfect Love.

While our spirits are created from the Breath of the Holy Mother, it is the Most Pure Daughter Who gives us our souls.

Sophia is therefore the highest ruler over the visible universe, and at the same time, the Mediatrix between the upper and the lower realms. She shapes this mundane universe after the heavenly prototypes, and forms the seven star-circles with their Archons (we believe Janati) under whose dominion are placed, according to the astrological conceptions of antiquity, the fates of all earthly things, and more especially of humanity. She is “the Mother” or “the Mother of the living.” (Epiph. Haer. 26, 10). As coming from above, She is Herself of pneumatic essence, the mētēr phōteinē (Epiph. 40, 2) or the anō dynamis (Epiph. 39, 2) from which all pneumatic souls draw their origin. (Wiki)

She is also often crowned with Seven Stars. She is known to have Seven Spirits, Seven Faces and Seven Pillars. (Wisdom 9-1. Wisdom means Sophia.) She is known as the Mother of the Seven Houses.

Wisdom hath builded her house, She hath hewn out her seven pillars:

These seven pillars being interpreted of the planetary heavens.

The Seven Planetary Powers were placed under Her.

There is so much more we could speak about, here, but let us move on to Sophia/Shekinah as the Holy Soul.

FAQ: Spirit/Soul Part I

Columbadi/Fri.

12 Astrea/Dec. 9

Lady Tethys

O, Madria Grace, Jana of Compassion, Love and Mercy, be with us.

May the Pure Stream of Your Virtues flow within me, in this world and it all the worlds to come.

~

Jacqueline asks: One thing I have long been curious about I think is alluded to here- that the Celestial Mother manifested our individual spirits, and that the Daughter “covers our spirits with souls so that we are able to enter manifest existence.” What is the distinction here between souls and spirits? If we originally emanated from Dea, then what is the purpose of the Daughter’s sacrifice and our resulting souls? I hope this makes sense.

And, further,

I guess the quote itself states that the purpose of the Daughter giving us souls is so that we can “enter manifest existence,” but I think that is the piece that I am unclear on; I don’t really know what that means.

~~~
Dear Jacqueline,
Thank you for these important, fundamental questions.
I think it might help if I first explain why our teaching concerning the sacrifice of the Daughter is a bit different than that found in our scriptures. The Mythos of the Daughter bases the Passion and Death of the Holy Daughter on the myth of the goddess Inanna. In fact, in the Madrian edition of the scriptures, you will find that the Holy Daughter is actually named Inanna. It was later shortened to Anna.
When I first entered the Faith, I was troubled by the fact that the goddess Inanna was a married and promiscuous goddess of sex and war, and did not die for altruistic reasons. I was also bothered by the fact that the goddess Inanna is not a Living Stream goddess. So, for these reasons, it was hard for me to accept her as an appropriate Form or Image for the Most Pure Daughter.
My other area of concern was that I truly struggled with the idea that Daughter God could die if She had not incarnated into material manifestation.
While the myth of Inanna, in part, might be an illustration of the suffering the Holy Daughter endures as She descends down through the Seven Realms, the literal death of the Daughter did not make sense for me. If the Holy Daughter did not incarnate as an human being with a flesh and blood body, and where She is God, how could She actually die?
God cannot die, the soul cannot die and the spirit cannot die. God is eternal. Once God dies, God is no longer eternal and is therefore, not God. And so it follows that if the Holy Daughter had truly died, then She was not eternal. If She was not eternal, then, it stands to reason, that She was not God. I couldn’t find any way around this conundrum.
One explanation that was presented to me was that the Holy Daughter gave Her Essence to Her Mother before descending through the realms. Ok, well, again, the more I thought about it, the more it did not make sense to me. If the Daughter emptied Herself of Her Essence, which is Her God-Nature, Her God-Spirit, Her Spirit Energy, then, what was left of Her? Was it empty Form? Without Her Essence, was the Form still the Holy Daughter? This and many more questions arose in my mind.
Another area of confusion for me was exactly why the Daughter had to actually die in order to sustain Creation. Exactly how did the Daughter’s Death lead to the sustaining of all Creation? The explanations offered to me did not satisfy me on a thealogical level.
I’m not implying that the scriptures are wrong. The Mythos is not meant to be taken literally. The Mythos is a story that is meant to point us to an unknowable Reality. But I felt that it made more sense to me, that rather than modeling the Holy Daughter on the Goddess Inanna and her descent and death,  the Holy Daughter should be modeled on the True Divine Feminine of our Age and Her Descent as the Holy Soul.
In our Age, the ending of the Age of Pisces and the beginning of the Age of Aquarius, the Divine Feminine God would be the Hindu and Buddhist goddesses, the Shekinah, the Divine Sophia and many would include Isis. These are Living Stream Images/Forms of Dea. The Hindu Goddesses, The Shekinah and the Divine Sophia are considered to be God or having the Nature of God. There are valid reasons for the Deanic mandate that Images/Faces/Forms of Dea should be Living Stream Images. Living Stream Images are those Whose worship has never been broken.
So, for the Janite Order, the Holy Daughter, in keeping with the Living Stream mandate, is modeled on Shekinah (as in the True Sabbath Queen, She is not just the Presence of the Father) and Sophia. In other words, for the Janite Order, the Divine Sophia and the Holy Shekinah are the Images/Forms which we use for the Holy Daughter.  The Divine Sophia is not limited to Christianity. She is worshiped across a wide-range of spiritualities, Traditions and religious denominations.
Both the Holy Shekinah and the Divine Sophia are known as the World Soul or the Holy Soul. {The Title, Divine Sophia, is here used to differentiate the non-Fallen Sophia, the Primordial Sophia from the Gnostic fallen Sophia who was in need of a saviour. (Typical demotion of a goddess.)}
Before we get into the Holy Shekinah and Sophia as the World Soul/Holy Soul and what that means, first we need to answer the question as to what is the distinction between souls and spirits:
We can say that we emanated from Dea, yes, but it is probably more accurate to say that She created our spirits from the Breathe of Her own Spirit. And, there is a difference between soul and spirit.
   The spirit is our essence, our essential selves. It is our light energy selves. I like this definition: The spirit is that part of you which is the direct creation of God. Your spirit is the highest aspect of who and what you are. It is a direct fragment of the Divine Life of God.
In studies of life between lives undertaken by certain psychologists  and as reported by those who have had NDE’s, after we die, we often appear as pure light energy, almost like brilliant balls of light energy. If true, this is what I think of when I think of our spirits, our energy selves. We can also take soul-form.
But, what about the soul? For human beings on this planet, in this realm, our souls are that part of us which has human character and which links with the human experience. And so, because it links with the human experience, it is necessary to have a soul in order to enter manifest creation. And so our spirit and our rarefied soul forms are our True Selves or Higher Selves.
The soul is a rarefied or ethereal or energy body. Many believe that the soul is where our personality and our emotions reside.
I like the following Kabbalistic definition of soul: People are really made in the image of God, which means that each of us are essentially divine beings. Each soul is a miniature version of God, like a fragmented holographic image. (Remember, Sophia’s Soul was ‘shattered’ so to speak, into myriad ‘fragments’.)
    We are not victims of original sin, but rather are covered up with ‘shells’ that need to be removed so that the original spark may be uncovered. Salvation comes when we are enlightened, when we remember the truth of what and who we really are. (Gnosis.) The Fall of Man is really a metaphor of our pre-existent soul wanting to descend in order to re-ascend. (Which is what the long version of our Creed essentially teaches.) (1)
We live in a state of ignorance and limitation. When we clear out the obstructions which cloud and obscure the Divine Spark within us, when we continuously choose to move towards Dea rather than away from Her (as our scriptures teach), then our souls evolve, the obscurity melts away and the Divine Spark within shines, again. It’s like our souls, which are the temple of spirit, are diamonds in the rough that must be refined and polished in order for the True Light to shine from within.
Plato taught that our souls pre-existed in the ideal Realm of Forms before we entered manifest creation and forgot from whence we truly originate. Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, which is echoed in our scriptures as the story of the of the race of maids who lived in the cave as told in, The Light, (Madrian edition title), along with  the Gnostic Hymn of the Pearl, aka, the Robe of Glory, illustrate that we must attain Gnosis, we must awaken to our True Selves, in order to return Home.
Our Lady guides us to this awakening. Some Gnostics teach that the Divine Sophia is the Divine Spark who resides within a secret chamber of our hearts (similar to the scriptural teaching of Dea residing in the Temple of our Hearts). She continuously strives to uncover the Divine Spark hidden within us.
A final note: The Deanic Faith is based, in part, on Platonic and Gnostic concepts, especially in the areas of Divine Forms, Primordial Ideas and the Pleroma. There are many forms of Gnosticism. Some older than others. We must remember when we are researching or referring to Gnostic Christianity, a latter form of Gnosticism, that Sophia was by then, demoted and in need of a male savior. Again, I refer you to the articles by Max Dashu which are found in our links section.
Tomorrow, we will continue with Our Lady as the Holy Soul and Her connection with our souls.
For now, I leave you with this lovely painting and prayer to Our Lady of the Divine Spark: http://www.shilohsophiashop.com/f/Our_Lady_of_the_Divine_Spark_E-Book_8_112.pdf
May Our Lady bless you,
Blessed is She.
