Living Seasonally – Sacred Season of Spring March 21st – June 12th

4 Columbina/March 24

Foradi/Sat.

Day of Madria Rhea.

O, Madria Rhea, Jana of Steadfastness, Temperance and Self-Restraint, be with us.

The Sacred Season of Spring

Columbina: March 21 – April 17
Maia: April 18 – May 15
Flora: May 16 – June 12

The Sacred Feast of Eastre hails the onset of Spring. Here in the northeast, we have a ways to go where it has been cold, the lakes are still frozen and the ground is covered in snow, but for all of us, it is the Season of renewed life.

When you live through a time of ice, snow and subzero F temps, each new leaf and every note of bird song of Spring appears to be nothing short of miraculous.

Wear the Dove

For those who follow Seasonal Living, the Sacred Symbol for Spring is the Dove and so we might choose to wear a dove pendant or pin either in addition to or instead of the Fora. Some pendants may be affixed to the bottom of the open knot Celtic cross pendant.

The Dove is the primary Symbol of the Holy Daughter, Who, in Janite Tradition, is image-based upon the Divine Sophia. The Holy Daughter, She Who is the Daughter of Light, She Who is the Daughter of Wisdom, [1] is the Three-fold Dove: the Dove of the Sacrifice, the Dove of Harmony by Her sustaining the world and the Dove of Peace. (The Dove of Sacrifice is from our liturgy.)

Liturgy

Our altar cloths are blue as are the two main altar candles, (which should be object blessed), for the Seasonal Element of Water, while the veils/hats/scarves and or shawls (males may wear prayer shawls) that we wear during the Rite of Sacrifice (RoS) and the liturgy are pink, green or both, in honor of the Jana of the Season, Madria Grace/Sai Sushuri.

Liturgy shall be celebrated, if possible, on the Day of the Holy Daughter, Lunadi/Monday. Obviously, this might not always be possible and so either Foradi/Saturday,  or Sunnadi/Sunday will suffice.

The Rite of Sacrifice

The RoS may be celebrated on the third day of the Crescent Moon either instead of or in addition to the Full Moon. The clergy shall serve it on both Moons. The Preface for the Crescent Moon is that of the Holy Daughter. The Preface for the Full Moon is that of the Celestial Mother. The next Full Moon, the Dove Moon, will be on 11 Columbina/March 31.

The Preface for the Great Liturgy, for clergy, for each Lunadi in Spring is that of the Holy Daughter, Our Gentle Dove of Peace.

We concentrate on the Virtues of Madria Grace which are Compassion, Love and Mercy.

Prayer/Chants/Songs

During prayer, we concentrate on the psalms, litanies and prayers to the Holy Daughter. And there will be more of those to come during this holy month. We can also pray to Her in our own words and spend time in contemplation of Her and communion with Her.

3. Psalm 1: Blessed are the souls

Blessed are the souls, O Daughter, who love Your name;
Your graces will comfort them.
Those souls will be refreshed as by fountains of water;
you will produce in them the fruits of justice.
Blessed are You, by Your holy heart.

By the beauty of Your Form,
You surpass all beings;
by the excellence of Your sanctity,
You surpass all angels and archangels.

Your mercy and Your grace are preached everywhere;
the Holy Mother has blessed the works of Your hands.

Oh Kore of the Descent and Shattering

Oh Kore, how deeply You have been hurt and humiliated in Descending,

my understanding is too shallow,

how strong Your Divine determination

to reach every place in reality and imagination,

to seek those who have forgotten they need a Saviour,

my memory is too unreliable,

how You shattered Your own Holy Soul, perfect, gentle and light,

remaining inside each of us, experiencing every act with us,

my voice is too weak,
to give adequate appreciation, devotion and praise to You,

Oh Kore, I glorify you, I magnify you and I adore You.

A recent comment from a Devotee:

Congratulations on the addition to your family! I hope mother & child are healthy and happy.

I can hardly contain myself for the posts on Advent & Nativity! It seems so wonderful and exciting to me this year. I’ve already begun putting up decorations, nearly a full week earlier than my family has done in years, and taking slightly larger steps to adding more pieces – such as Advent Candles – into the house this year.

I have seen it mentioned in several places today – the Sun Wheel and the Silver Tree. What are those? Or should I wait until your posts on them?

~

Dear Rebekah, thank you so much! Grandchildren are truly a joy! I am now blessed with six grandchildren!!! Both mother and son are doing great, thank you. And thank you for your contagious enthusiasm about the upcoming Holy Season!

We are excited about the coming month on so many levels both spiritually and within our Ekklesia.

Within our Ekklesia, we are happy to announce that one of our priestesses, Madria Kathi, will be elevated to ArchMadria during the holy month of Astrea and another member is preparing to become a Madrina (deaconess) after the Winter season!

(Janites have three levels of clergy: 1) Madrina, which means god or guardian mother, for the office of deaconess. This office is symbolic of the Holy Daughter. 2) Madria, which means mother, for the office of priestess, symbolic of the Celestial Mother. And, 3) ArchMadria, for the office of high priestess or bishop, symbolic of the Great Mother.)

star

Spiritually, we have one of the holiest months of the year ahead of us during which we celebrate the emanation of the Holy Daughter from the Celestial Mother.

Our scriptures use the traditional story of a Divine Birth on the Cosmic level in order to describe the eternal emanation of the Daughter from the Mother. This emanation is similar to the emanation of Sophia from the Barbelo, aka, Higher Sophia and this is also similar to Lower Shekinah emanating from Higher Shekinah.

The Holy Daughter emanates from the Celestial Mother in order to be here, with us. She is immanent, with us and She clothes, covers and protects our spirits with our souls. This is what makes our life here on Earth possible.

There can be no more intimate relationship with Deity than that of the Holy Daughter sharing Her very Soul with us. (This thealogy is taken from authentic teachings.)

Sophia-Goddess-of-Wisdom-with-chalice

And so, this coming feast of Daughter’s Day, the day of Yule, is a source of great joy for Janite Deanists. The Holy Daughter is our North Star of Hope. She separates from the Divine Mother in order to be here, in union with us. It was not the Mother’s Will to allow us to dwell in complete exile and so, She sent Her Holy Daughter to us.

The Daughter is our bridge to the Divine Mother and at the end of our incarnations, we, our spirits and souls, will be assumed, along with the Holy Daughter, into full reunion/communion with Our Divine Mother God, where we will abide with Her in everlasting Bliss. This is what we are celebrating on Daughter’s Day, which some call the Nativity of the Holy Daughter.

During the month of Astrea, we also look forward to the feast of Madria Sofia, Jana of Wisdom, which takes place on 1 Astrea/Nov. 28. Next, on 7 Astrea/Dec. 4, we light our first candle of the Sunwheel, which is the Green candle of Wisdom. This Sacred Month culminates with the lovely celebration of the Star Maiden on 28 Astrea/Dec. 25th. This works well for those who practice a dual Path of both Deanism and Christianity.

(Please note: some of our devotees practice a dual Path. Some are Jews and Christians for whom the Deanic Faith is the “Mother God side of religion”. Others are Pagans or Druids who also incorporate the Deanic Faith, although our belief system is different than that of neo-Paganism. And, of course, for many devotees, the Deanic Faith is their sole religion similar to the Shakti Tradition of Hinduism.)

Now that I have laid the basic thealogical foundation of the upcoming feast days, I will be writing weekly updates on the lighting of the Sunwheel.  For now, I will offer a basic explanation of the Deanic Sunwheel and the Janite Tradition of the Silver Tree.

rw3380-lg

The Sunwheel, a beautiful tradition which was incorporated into the Deanic Faith by ArchMatrona Georgia Cobb of the Lady of Light Chantry,  is very much like an Advent Wreath (which has pre-Christian origins), except we use different colored candles which represent our main Five Symbols.

An actual Advent Wreath may be used and the fifth candle placed in the center; you may purchase a five candle Advent wreath as shown above,  or you may simply buy five pillar-style candles and place them in a circle and decorate the circle as you please. In the footnote below is an amazing array of five candle advent wreaths that are available as well as examples of home-made wreaths.  (see footnote 1).

Beginning with the first Sunnadi/Sunday on 1 Astrea/Nov. 27th: the Green candle of Wisdom is lit. This is symbolic of Dea Madria or Mother God as the Apple of Wisdom.

The second Sunnadi on 8 Astrea/Dec. 4, we light the Yellow candle of Hope. This is symbolic of Dea Filia or Daughter God as the (North) Star of Hope.

Third Sunnadi on 15 Astrea/Dec. 11: the Violet candle of Faith is lit. This is symbolic of Dea Matrona or Great Mother God as the Fora of Faith.

Fourth Sunnadi on 22 Astrea/Dec.18: we light the Blue candle of Peace. This is symbolic of Dea Filia, Daughter God as the Dove of Peace.

On Yule Eve, 23 Astrea/Dec. 20: we light the Red candle of Joy. This is symbolic of Dea Madria, Mother God, as the Rose of Joy.

These candles not only represent the Five Sacred Symbols, but also the Five Holy Mysteries of our Faith of which the Symbols are, well, symbolic!

As the Apple of Wisdom, the Celestial Mother is the Ground and Matrix of All Being.

As the Star of Hope, the Holy Daughter comes to us as our Soteria (Saviouress in that She is here with us, gives us our souls and guides us back to the Divine Mother).

As the Violet Fora of Faith, the Great Mother is the Primordial Source of the All.

As the Red Rose of Joy, the Celestial Mother is our assumption into the inner Heavenly realm which we call the Real or the Pleroma (as opposed to the outer realm which our Tradition calls Avalon.)

~

Each week, I will be listing appropriate scriptures to be read after lighting the candle (s), along with a brief devotional prayer. Devotees may also pray in their own words.

Very similar to the use of the Christian Advent wreath, each candle is first lit on a Sunnadi/Sunday and then each night thereafter during dinner time. It is extinguished after dinner. For Janites, Yule Eve, according to certain pre-Christian European Traditions, is Mother’s Night.  Yule, according to the same Tradition, is Daughter’s Day and so you see that the Sunwheel culminates on the night before the Solstice, on Mother’s Night. In the Deanic Faith, the Celestial Mother is known as the Supernal Sun; the Holy Daughter is the Supernal Moon. In our Tradition, Supernal means both Heavenly and Primoridal.

holiday-tartan-small-shimmering-tree-tea-light-candle-holder-yankee-candle

The Silver Tree is in honor of our Creation Story, where it is said that the original Creation was silver. The Silver Tree is also in honor of the Janati as their color is said to have been silver before they emanated from Dea Madria, Mother God, into the Seven Living Streams of Virtue.

Silver is said to contain all the colors of the rainbow. And so, for Janites, Silver is considered to be a sacred color, containing within all the potentialities of not only the Janati, but of Creation, itself.

I use the above Silver Tree that may be obtained from Yankee candle. (2) I tend to keep mine on my altar all year long. Others keep it solely as an Astrean (during the month of Astrea) tradition.

Some devotees actually use a silver Nativity tree and decorate it all in silver moons, suns, stars and fairies. This is my goal, as well. Each year, I hope to obtain more of these decorations until my tree is filled with them. Moons for Daughter God, Suns for Mother God, Stars for Great Mother God and fairies because we honor them along with the Fairie Queen Aine.

Thank you for your comment and question, Rebekah! May Our Lady bless you!

The Holy Daughter wears the garb of Creation, but She is not Creation.

Thou, Mother of Compassion, Come. Come Thou revealer of the Mysteries Concealed. Come, Thou Who gives Joy to all who are One with Thee. Come and commune with us in this thanksgiving. (Gnostic Hymn.)

~

When the Divine manifests Herself on the physical plane, She wears a wardrobe suitable for the occasion. She can garb Herself in anything: ex: winds, clouds, planets, stars, trees, flowers, birds, animals, or people. However, that does not mean that any of those physical forms are Her Body. Her Spiritual Body is within those forms as a person is within their clothing. ArchMatrona Georgia E. B. Cobb of the Lady of Light Chantry (LLC).

mother-of-the-world-1937 (1)

Some have asked us if the Earth is the Body of Dea.

We hold that Our Divine Mother is Transcendent, beyond Her Creation. The Holy Daughter is Immanent, She is with us in Creation and exists within us as the Divine Spark of our souls, the Flame of our hearts.

We do not see the Cosmos or the Earth as Dea’s body because She is Pure Spirit, Pure Light and the Cosmos is Her Creation. How could the Creatrix become Her creation? But, the Holy One may certainly flow through Her Creation, just as electricity flows through a wire, but is not the wire; just as heat flows through the iron, but is not the iron; just as She is the Divine Spark within us, but She is not us.

Though we have taught this before, this thealogy is so fundamental to our religion, that it bears repeating at this time:

As the Great Mother, She is Supernal Life. She is Absolute Deity. She is Singularity. She is the Dark beyond the light and the Light beyond the darkness. Her Name is Mysteria/Mystery. She is Dea Matrona. (Great Mother Goddess). She is the Mother of our conscious awareness.

As the Celestial Mother, She Supernal Light. She is the Ground and Matrix of all Being. She is Spirit. She is Transcendent (beyond Creation). Her Name is Mari. She is Dea Madria. (Mother God). She is the Mother of our Spirits.

As the Holy Daughter, She is Supernal Love. She is the Ruling and Sustaining Energies of manifest creation. She is Soul. She is Immanent (within Creation). Her Name is Kore/Kora. She is Dea Filia. (Daughter God). She is the Mother of our souls.

All material manifestation began as Supernal Primordial Ideas of Potentiality. The Below, which is created, dense, material manifestation, is but a poor reflection of the Above, which is rarefied Supernal Reality, our True Home.

At one point, in the very beginning of our existence, beyond our memory, we desired to extend our knowledge beyond the limits of the knowable, which brought us into a state of ignorance and formlessness. (This is not the same as the erroneous notion of original sin, nor was this desire a moral evil.)

As indicated in the long form of our Creed, we believe that the Celestial Mother honored our sovereign will and our desire to know what lies beyond the limits of the knowable. She did this by creating the manifest universe. This is very similar to what is said of the ‘Fallen’ Sophia, (a term we categorically reject): “that by her desire to know what lay beyond the limits of the knowable she had brought herself into a state of ignorance and formlessness.”  (1)  While the ‘Fallen Sophia’ is often said to be the Archetypal story of our souls, the True Holy Daughter did not ‘Fall’, She is Eternal Perfection. She is Supernal Purity. She is God. We are the ones who, at a time beyond times, desired to know and experience that which lay beyond Perfection, not the Holy Daughter.

womanlightyel

As mentioned in a previous article, like the Holy Shekinah in Kabbalism, the Holy Daughter, Whom Janites call Kore or Kora, which means (Divine) Maid or Maiden, makes it possible for us to experience that which lies outside of Perfection by giving us our souls. As the soul allows the opposites of body and spirit to unite, the Shekinah plays this role for us.  She is the Soul of humanity. She has given a portion of Herself in order for each human to come into this world. (2).  And further:.  She has always stayed with us, wherever we were exiled or isolated or shut out, the Shekinah was always there in exile and isolation with us. And, like Sophia, the Holy Daughter is the Divine Spark within each of us.

Daughter

As the Ruling and Sustaining Energy of Creation, we may certainly sense the Divine Kora’s (the Divine Maiden’s) underlying, flowing Presence through-out Nature; with the wind,  in a rippling lake or across a meadow blanketed with multi-hued wildflowers. But, She is not the wind or the lake or the meadow. As ArchMatrona Georgia so eloquently stated, She can garb Herself in anything. She is able to garb Herself with the wind, in the lake or across the meadow, which is a beautiful reality.

Wildflower meadow at Swinethorpe, Britain by Richard Croft

In summary:

The Divine Kora does not take on material form. She does not incarnate either as a human being or as our Sister, the Earth. Rather, She is the Mother of our souls, She is the Mother of the Earth and She is the Divine Spark within our souls.

And as the ruling Energy of Creation, the Energy of Love, She may take on the garb of Nature, but the Holy Daughter gives it Form. Nature is not Her Form…..

She is the Form of Nature.
