Dear Friends and devotees of Dea,
Here, so that we may all be prepared to participate in our custom, is the prayerful act of lighting the (Yellow Candle of Hope, Green Candle of Wisdom, Violet / Purple Candle of Faith, Blue Candle of Peace), Red Candle of Joy. The candle is lit (electric tea light or table lamp switched on) before dinner or early evening, followed by a brief scripture reading and prayers tonight on Stelladi or Wednesday 23rd Astrea / 20th December. This evening is known as Modraniht which is Old English for `Mothers-night`.

Sun Wheel – The Red Candle of Joy

Tonight is Mother’s Night, a native European Tradition as well as a Christian Tradition (when it was moved to Christmas Eve.) How appropriate that the candle of the Celestial Mother, as the Rose of Joy, be lit on this night, the night of Her Joy, the night of our Joy.
As we wait with the Holy Mother, we might offer Her incense and flowers, milk and honey, a rosary, hymns, special prayers or the Rite of Sacrifice. We also light the last candle on our Sun Wheel. 
So, we light the Red Candle of Joy in honour of the Celestial Mother as Déa, Rose of Joy. The Red Candle also signifies the Sacred Season of Summer, the direction of South, the time of Noon, the Symbol of the Rose and Madria Vicka. The Mystery is Assumpta, meaning that the Celestial Mother, is the Assumption of our souls when our incarnations are complete. It is also the Feast of Rose of Heaven, Rosa Caeli. The Celestial Mother, is the Rose of Joy and the Fiery Rose of Heaven.
Dea as the Rose of Joy, the Glad Welcome:
Radiating from the center Heart-Hearth of Home,
The Flowering and Fruitful Rose Garden of Delight. 
The Rose is known as the Queen of Flowers and so is a fitting symbol for the Celestial Mother.

The oldest known use of a rose as the basis for a stylized design come from Sumeria. One is a Sumerian seal showing two scorpions protecting the rosette of the Goddess Inanna, dating to the Early Bronze Age or Uruk period, circa 3300 BC. The rosette was a sacred symbol of this Goddess.
“As a symbol, the rosette is often thought to evoke the goddess Inanna/Ishtar. Given its pervasiveness in Neo-Assyrian iconography, especially in association with figures of the genii and the king, there may be a more universal symbolism behind the motif, such as regeneration, rebirth, or initiation, all of which may after all be thought of to be encompassed by Inanna/Ishtar’s religious symbolism in ancient Mesopotamia.”

The petals are often illustrated as heart-shaped, which allows the four to be seen as eight. This symbol, usually termed a rosette, is very ancient indeed and is seen from India, across the Middle East, to Egypt. It is a solar symbol (and the source of the ancient swastika).

The oldest known visual evidence of roses is preserved in a fresco from the palace of Knossos on Crete. This piece of art dates from around 1600 BC. The fresco was partially destroyed during the earthquake of 1500 BC which brought down the palace. Portions of the fresco, though broken, vividly depict animals and flowers – among them are several examples of roses. 
The red thorny flower known as the rose  derived its name from the sea nymph “Rhodos”,  who according to Greek mythology lived on the island of Rhodes. In the Greek language, the word “rose” means red which is coincidentally the official color of the Roman Empire. The rose subsequently appeared on Rhodian coinage and was routinely used in Greco-Roman ceremonies in worship to the goddess Isis. 
In Egypt during the Greco-Roman period, wall paintings within Egyptian tombs included roses as a part of their subject matter, objects were decorated with rose motifs, and roses were used in funerary wreaths.
Evidence of two types of roses used in pharaonic Egypt have survived. One is the “Rosa Gallica” (Rosa gallica officinalis ‘The Apothecary’s Rose’) which was widely cultivated in parts of Europe, in Rome and Greece, and still survives today. The other is “Rosa Ricardii” or Richardii , which became extinct in Egypt by Islamic times. It was “Rosa Ricardii” also known as “Rosa Sancta” that was identified as the type of rose included in the funerary wreaths found in tombs of Hawara by Egyptologist William M. Flinders Petrie in the later part of the nineteenth century. These wreaths have been dated to 170 AD. 
The Rose Burial of Magician / Priestess of Isis named Myrithis
Archeologist, Albert Guyet (1856-1916), discovered a female, Egyptian magician/priestess named Myrithis, who belonged to the cult of Isis, in her small crypt within a Christian Coptic necropolis of Antinoopolis. A town that was officially founded by the emperor Hadrian on 30 October AD 130 in memory of his favorite Antinous, who is drowned here while apparently saving his master. Abandoned in the 10th Century.

The other findings in the grave included a tambourine and a mirror, which identified Gayet’s Myrithis as a magician/priestess. These creative attempts at illustrations to revive the findings are characteristic of Gayet interpretations.
Myrithis’ mummy had been on display in a prominent museum in Paris, the Guimet. (“…The paraphernalia of the sorceress Myrithis, including her gorilla skin, mystic lamps, magic papyrus, tambourine and complicated mirror of various faces, all of which, with the yellow clothed mummy, have been transferred to the museum.” page 560 The late Dr. Charles Beke’s discoveries of Sinai in Arabia and of Midian, by Ch. T. Beke). Myrithis worshiped Isis and practiced magic. Among her grave goods were rosebuds, rose petals, wreaths and garlands. Her ceremonial mantle was embroidered throughout with five-petaled roses. Rosa ricardii, that had been introduced into Egypt around the 8th Century B.C., probably from Syria, or more likely, Phoenicia (Rosa phoenicia) – modern day Lebanon. Rosa ricardii rose is a single, five-petaled rose that is very fragrant.

Without going into the complexity of Egyptian religion and magic, at some point the rose overtook the role of the sacred lotus flower in Isis theology because of its association with the planet Venus and the five-pointed star.
The images of priestesses of Isis show them dressed with a scarf tied at the center of her breastbone into a knot resembling a rose. Rose oil and rose incense was used by priestesses of Isis during funeral ceremonies in the belief that being exposed to the scent of the burning incense induced a mystical state — the soul of the departed merged into the smoke.
After the introduction to Egypt of Rosa gallica during the Greco-Roman period, by the Greeks and Romans, roses also became part of the Egyptian economy through rose farming, commissioned by the Romans to supply the Roman public. When the Greek dynastic family of the Ptolemies took political control of Egypt in the 4th Century B.C., they also followed the cult of Isis knowing it would give them greater validity among the native Egyptians. In fact, Cleopatra, a Ptolemy, had the sails of her barge seeped in rosewater — less likely because it was Isis’ flower but more because of her obsession with the fragrance. 
Attar of roses was one of the oils used in the later periods during mummification. Roses and rose oil were used in ancient Egyptian medicine. Private and temple gardens included roses in their flower beds. In ancient Egypt, it was the emblem of immortality and beauty.
A temple dedicated to Isis located near Mikro Elos in Brexiza on the borders of the Marathon and Nea Makri (has been) under excavation (since 1968). This area is located in Attica in southern Greece. Statues of Osiris and Isis have been recovered from the area, the originals are in the Marathon Museum, copies have been situated on the excavation site for tourists. 
In Rome, an effigy of the goddess Cybele, known as the Magna Mater, (Great Mother) was celebrated by being carried in procession covered with roses. A Greek legend tells that it was Cybele herself who created the rose. 
Goddesses of the Rose
This flower has been intricately connected to our ideas of love and beauty and as such has enjoyed an association with several Goddesses, among them are Inanna, Ishtar, Aphrodite, Venus, Lakshmi, Chloris, Cybele, Flora, Demeter, Astarte, Aurora, and Hecate.  Amaterasu of Japan and Iamanja of Brazil. 
It is sacred to the Fairy Queen. In ancient India, the Great Mother was the Holy Rose. In China, the flower of the Goddess was the red China rose. 
Under Christianity, the foremost personification of the Divine Feminine was, of course, the Virgin Mary, so it was perhaps inevitable that the Rose became her special flower as it had been for the goddesses of old. 
The Blessed Virgin Mary in Christianity, became known as Rosa Mystica or Mystical Rose.
The symbolism of the Rose, which is known as the Lotus of the West, is complex. What is relevant to us is the hidden heart at the center which conceals the Secrets of the Divine Mystery.
The opening petals of the Rose symbolize the unfolding of higher consciousness and the life of the soul, itself. 
The sacred season of Summer is dedicated to the Celestial Mother as Centre and Essence, and the Supernal blazing sun of the Generatrix of creation. The solar fire within the world is blazing up to consume the separation of matter and raise us across the abyss of separation to be one within our hearts with the Heart of the Mother. 
Our Faith teaches us that our hearts are temples which are in the shape of a Rose and so, in the Deanic Faith and in the Marian devotions within Catholicism, the Heart of Dea and the heart of Mary have always been symbolized by the rose or being surrounded by roses. 
In medieval Europe, the Rose as a symbol of union with the divine may have been influenced by Arabian and Persian teachings from the time when Spain was an Islamic country. The Sufi teacher, Hazrat Inayat Khan writes:
“Just as the rose consists of many petals held together, so the person who attains to the unfoldment of the soul begins to show many different qualities. The qualities emit fragrance in the form of a spiritual personality. The rose has a beautiful structure, and the personality which proves the unfoldment of the soul has also a fine structure, in manner, in dealing with others, in speech, in action. The atmosphere of a spiritual being pervades the air like the perfume of a rose.” 
Rosa Mundi is a species of rose. (recorded as far back as the fifteenth century). The color is pale pink to white with deep Rose-pink stripes overlaid. (A sport or mutation of Rosa gallica ‘Officinalis’, sharing all of its virtues except colour). Its fragrance has been described as quite intense to moderately strong. 
As Lady Olivia Robertson (of the Fellowship of Isis) once stated, “Through the understanding gained of how to live pleasantly with those around us (to become Wholly Love), cosmic awareness begins to dawn. This is a natural awakening of the soul, (just) as a plant grows, flowers and bears fruit. This community of souls
interconnected through love and wisdom has been symbolized by medieval philosophers as ‘Rosa Mundi’, a rambling rose bush that grows throughout all spheres, and flowers in the hearts of all beings and existences.” 
We believe that, if the Celestial Mother is Transcendent, then She is the Rose of Heaven, Rosa Coeli, not Rose of the World, Rosa Mundi.
On our Sunwheel, we light the Red Candle of Joy in honour of the Celestial Mother as Déa, Rose of Joy. The Mystery is Assumpta, meaning that the Celestial Mother, Mari, is the Assumption of our souls. It is also the Feast of Rose of Heaven, Rosa Caeli. The Celestial Mother, Mari, is the Rose of Joy and the Fiery Rose of Heaven.

Red symbolises Fire which is the Element of this season.

Very simply put, we refer to the Fiery Rose Heart of Our Lady. This Unconditional Divine Fire is the Flame of Love.
The Flame has its origin in Love and in the Supernal Fire of the Sun which shines down upon the World. Without this holy fire, the heart grows cold; the soul weakens. The Flame of Love is strong, able to conquer all that is not of Déa within the Temple of the Heart, while illuminating the True Joy within. 
This element is considered to be the first element that was born when the universe was created. Fire is attributed with transformational and purifying powers. It can give warmth and enable life, and it can also burn and destroy. In the spiritual plane, Fire stands for Light and in the physical plane, it is the Sun or Flame. The element symbolizes incredible energy, activity, creativity, passion, freedom, power, love, vision, strength, will, assertiveness, courage and dynamism. 
In the practicing alchemists point of view, fire is a catalyst to both initiating and completing metaphysical demonstrations. This symbol signifies upward mobility, forward motion, rising flames and aspirations to solar embodiment (in both literal and philosophical senses). To move into the energy of fire is to be utterly consumed, transformed and lifted out of limitation (vis a vis: smoke rising). 
In aromatherapy, rose carries the highest healing frequency. ‘Rose’ is also the past tense of ‘rise,’ which means to grow, to go beyond — to metamorphose! It’s a verb, which is really what we are — we’re more process than product. The interface of the spiritual and the material is where we co-create, co-evolve.

These 150 psalms are taken from the Psalter of the Blessed Virgin Mary written by St. Bonaventure and have been painstakingly adapted by Mr Glenn King and ArchMadria Candra Sophia. They will be incorporated into our Hours (a work in progress), our liturgy and our Feast Day prayers. These psalms are taken from the Living Stream in the West.
For the most part, we have removed archaic language however, Thee and Thou, when referring to Our Lady, denotes honor and the respect that is due to Her.
Our thanks to Mr. King for this valuable service to the Filianic/Deanic community.
PSALM 108: O, Lady, heed my praise
O Lady, heed my praise:

Meaning of Charis: Joseph H. Thayer made some significant observations concerning the meaning of charis:
“that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm, loveliness…good-will, loving-kindness, favor… charis is used pre-eminently of that kindness by which God [Dea] bestows favors even upon the ill-deserving, and grants to sinners the pardon of their offences, and bids them accept of eternal salvation through Christ [Kore Di-Jana].”

Propitiation: is an action meant to regain someone’s favor or make up for something you did wrong.

10. Madrina Sophia’s comment about Psalm 41: As the deer longs for the sparkling brook, poetically expresses the longing for Dea that I have felt all this human life. Which also reminds me of the Scripture, Title 3, Chapter 8,

Kear: A crack or flaw, the chasm or abyss that lies between Déa and each soul which opened when we chose to experience material manifestation.

Our Mother God Reigns, let the people rejoice:
She sits on the High Throne of Heaven.
Great in Ekklesia is Thy glory, O Lady:
and in Cosmos, shines forth Thy magnificence.
Sing before Her, the harmonious choirs:
and adore Her throne, for it is holy.
In Her Flames, the Fire of Love
and round about her are those who worship Her.
Her Seven Laws are before our eyes:
and the rule of compassion is in Her heart.

Rose of Unconditional Love Meditation 
Sit in a comfortable position with your eyes closed.
Bring your awareness to your body and the breath. Breathe in and out deeply from the belly 5-6 times.
If any thoughts come up, don’t resist them, simply allow them to pass without engaging in them. Imagine your thoughts as leaves floating down a stream, they are there, but you are just looking at them, observing them as they go by.
Imagine you are standing in the centre of a golden stone walled garden, it is filled with different coloured rose bushes. The air around you is still and warm, and you can smell the glorious scent of the roses rising up in the warm air. It is cheering.
Behind you is a small, red bench. You sit down there. It’s amazing how clear and crisp every colour is, how every leaf and every flower seems almost electrified with life. All your senses seem stronger here.
As you are relaxing there, concentrate upon your slow and deep breathing, feel it creating space in your heart.
Feel the glow of your favourite colour of a rose flower* filling your heart with warmth and light. With each inhale create a rose petal and with each exhale smile. Take your time creating a perfect rose flower… (pause).
Inhale unconditional love, happiness, compassion, oneness of the Divine…. Exhale, unconditional love, happiness, compassion, oneness of the Divine… Emanate and project your smiling heart to the planet and into the cosmos. Breathe… (pause).
It’s as though Celestial Mother in the Divine form of a rose, and even the very air here knows who you are, and is emanating unconditional love for you. Joy fills your body and mind. Let it in.
