Dear Friends and devotees of Dea,

Here, so that we may all be prepared to participate in our custom, is the prayerful act of lighting the (Yellow Candle of Hope, Green Candle of Wisdom), Violet / Purple Candle of Faith. The candle is lit (electric tea light or table lamp switched on) before dinner or early evening, followed by a brief scripture reading and prayers on Sunnadi or Sun Day 13th Astrea / 10th December.

Today, within the Divine Cosmic Drama, we honor Mysteria, the Great Mother, as the Veiled Fora of Faith. She is known in both the Janite and Lucienne communities as Déa Matrona, which means the Great Mother Goddess (Great Mother God). “The Gaulish [1] theonym [2] (which should be theanym, in this case) Mātr-on-ā signifies “great mother.”

The title, Matrona, comes from the Goddess, Déa Matrona [3] for whom the river, Marne, was named (in ancient times it was called the Matrona river). She is Absolute Deity, the Dark beyond the light and the Light beyond the darkness.

Ground of All Being, Ultimate Source, the Supreme Being, Gnostic Monas, the Great Provider, the abundance of the Cosmos.
She is the original Fountain, the Great Cosmic River, from which all else flows.
She is not so wholly transcendent that She is not also with me as I am in Her. We may describe what She is not and we may also describe what She is, as far as our finite minds are capable. [For more info in links: 4]

The Violet / Purple candle also signifies the Season of Moura. [For more info in links: 5]
Moura may either translate as darkness or death. It indicates that, like Sophia, the Holy Daughter suffered a descent down through the realms. Some, in our Faith, believe the Daughter died, others do not. Devotees are free to believe according to their conscience.

The time of the Dark Hour before the Dawn, the Great Symbol of the Fora.

I visualise the Fora as a three dimensional figure in glowing gold, with the three lines running north-south, east-west and up-down, all intersecting at the centre, where there is a glowing golden sphere. Madrina Sophia.

The Great Symbol of the Fora. This is symbolic of Dea Matrona, Great Mother God as the Fora of Faith. The word “fora” means “foundation” or “fundamental” because it is a symbol of the “foundational form” or “fundamental pattern” of the “foundational-fundamental principle of the Cosmos”. The Mystery is Moura (which means dark & fate) which encompasses the Descent of the Holy Daughter and Quassare: The Shattering of the Divine Soul of the Holy Daughter. (Some devotees view this as a symbolic or actual death of our Holy Daughter).

Our Scriptures teach that the Holy Daughter suffered a torturous Descent down through the Realms before Her Death. These scriptural verses, taken altogether, are seemingly inspired by the Mythos of Inanna, Persephone, and the Passion of the Christ. Our scriptures continue with the story of how after Her death, the Holy One went to the deepest, darkest realms in order to carry the Light of the Mother to every corner of existence. (Jesus was said to have descended into hell, after death, to free the souls waiting there. Persephone, of course, spent six months in Hades.) On the Holy Feast of Eastre, as evidenced in the Mythos of Persephone, the Daughter was rescued and resurrected by Her Mother.

In contrast to the Mythos of Persephone, the Divine Sophia is not saved by Her Mother. Rather, She, like Quan Yin, chooses to remain immanent with us. She becomes an integral Part of us, to unite as One Being with us, until the day we desire nothing but Perfect Love and so at that ending of the time of our Soul Journey, She ascends with us, assuming our souls unto the Celestial Mother in the Heavenly Realm of Bliss, the Pleroma, our True Home.

which reminds us of the word vibration, the Holy Daughter’s torturous Descent down through the ever increasingly denser and darker dimensions eventually causing…

“for She has given a portion of Herself in order for each human to come into being in this world. In giving of Herself to humans, in this state of physical density and isolation, the World Soul becomes shattered. This shattering can be metaphorically grasped in considering what might happen to a glass alembic or flask when too much pressure is put upon in the alchemical works. Thus, the Shekinah represents the ultimate archetype of selfless sacrifice. All Her sacrifices have been for the benefit of creation so that humankind may experience
this life in order to fulfill its destiny and purpose.” [8]. And, this is exactly how we understand the Sacrifice of the Holy Daughter.

Sources for this Myth of the Divine Shattering of Shekinah/Sophia may be found within certain traditions of Kabbalism, in Gnostic schools of thought and in ancient Syrian Gnostic Christianity.

So the one word Quassare leads us through the Cosmic drama in it’s entirety.

(Interestingly enough, in Greek, Divine Shattering is Feminine: theía thráfsi.)

“I picture the Divine Shattering of the Holy Daughter like an hologram that has been shattered into a million pieces. Each shattered piece (us) is still a reflection of the Whole and yet, the Core of the Original Wholeness is still intact because the Holy Daughter is God and God cannot disintegrate. She cannot die.

The Holy Daughter is like the Central Piece of the Original Hologram. Though the fragile, rarefied outward pieces of the Daughter’s Soul was Shattered (and Sophia is said to have had a rarefied Body—Soul), Her Essence, Her Spirit, did not, could not, shatter, disintegrate.

Thus, the Original Immanent Image of She Who is the Holy Daughter, was Shattered, and yet, remained Whole in and of Herself and we, Her Divine Sparks, each were en-souled with Her Soul. She is the Soul of our souls and the Spirit of the Divine Sparks within us.

To summarize: In Her desire to be immanent with us, we who are the Children of the Earth / the Children of Dea, after our fall into density, the painful Descent through the denser, lower vibrational Realms proved to be too much for the delicate, rarefied Soul-Body of the Holy Daughter, one which was not protected by a material body and so, it Shattered. We became One in Soul with the Holy Daughter. We contain souls that were given to us out of Her Sacrifice; we contain within our souls Her Divine Sparks.” [9]

On our Sunwheel, we light the Violet / Purple Candle of Faith in honour of the Holy Daughter, Koré. (Pronounced Korah or Koree, which means Maiden.) The Mystery which it represents is the Quassare: The Shattering of the Divine Soul of the Holy Daughter. We also honour the Great Symbol of Fora (Great Mother).

The Violet / Purple candle also signifies the Season of Moura, the direction of Center, the time of the Dark Hour before the Dawn, Jana Madrias Candra, Theia and Rhea.

Title 2, The Crystal Tablet, verses 1-11.

1. Existence is a web of tapestry. 2. A web is a pattern of many crossroads connected by short paths. 3. Some crossroads are the intersection of many paths, some of but a few. Some are great and some are small. Each path has its own colour.
4. Every crossroads is a choice, and every choice has a spiritual meaning. 5. In each turning we choose either to come closer to Perfection or else to move away from Her. 6. In the first way the soul perfects herself in beauty; in the second she grows duller and more coarse. 7. Meditate:

Basic Soul Connection Meditation [27]

Sit in a comfortable position with your eyes closed.
Bring your awareness to your body and the breath. Breathe in and out deeply from the belly 5-6 times.
Start to sense the space and stillness surrounding your body. Don’t judge, just observe.
If any thoughts come up, don’t resist them, simply allow them to pass without engaging in them. Imagine your thoughts as leaves floating down a stream, they are there, but you are just looking at them, observing them as they go by.
Continue noticing the space that is inside of you, use your breath to increase the space inside and around your body. If it helps, you can imagine this space as Divine Light filling you and the space around you.
This may correspond with the Holy Feminine Trinity: [26]
Great Mother – Luminous, Shimmering Darkness.
Celestial Mother – Bright Yellow.
Holy Daughter – Bright White.
Or it may be another coloured light of significance to you.
Go deeper into this space, allow your entire body and mind to sink deeper- keep up with your breathing and use each inhale and exhale to guide you.
Once you feel a connection to this space you may begin to feel tingles or the gentle hum of your soul.
At this stage, ask your soul for guidance, for a healing, or to present itself to you more clearly through life.
Notice what starts to occur within you now. All experiences will be different so stay open to what your soul is communicating to you.
Finish the mediation by gently coming back into the awareness of your physical body; then slowly open up your eyes.

Prayerful Act:

On our Sunwheel, we light the Yellow Candle of Hope in honour of the Holy Daughter, Koré. (Pronounced Korah or Koree, which means Maiden.) The Mystery which it represents is the Winter Mystery of Adoria. Unlike the Christ of Christianity, the Holy Daughter did not incarnate as an human being here on Earth, rather, in the manner of the Divine Sophia, She emanated from the Celestial Mother and took on the rarefied Form of Soul. She is the Triple Star: the Star of Hope; the Midnight Star of Wonder and the Guiding North Star. This is the Mystery which we celebrate on Daughter’s Day / Adoria.

On Sunnadi or Sun Day / 6th Astrea / 3rd December.

The Yellow candle of Hope is also representative of North, Air, Midnight and Jana Madria Sage.

I use a favourite English nursery rhyme from my childhood. Now I understand the traveler means the soul incarnated. Diamond in the Madrian Geniae correspondences are Sun and Theia therefore as a diamond star, it symbolically suggests to me our Holy Mother and Her Holy Daughter being one, as in the Scripture above. Holy Apple Orchard in a Field [8]

1. Begin by imagining yourself as a ‘tree’ in the Holy Apple Orchard in a Field. Imagine the Holy Daughter’s presence surrounding you and then spreading out to cover the whole of the field.
2. Visualise the other trees in the field, feel them vibrating with the Holy Daughter’s presence. Visualise the celestial birds and other creatures that inhabit this spiritual domain. Hear their different sounds and calls as they fill the air of the field. Feel the sunlight and the warmth, the rich, nurturing soil and the cool, soothing breeze.
3. Now turn your mind up to the sky towards heaven. Sense the overshadowing presence of the Holy Celestial Mother, blessed be, Her. Feel the power and majestic glory of Her Presence.
4. Now visualise the givine dew as it falls down from heaven upon the field. Feel the gentle caress of its drops. Feel the rejuvenating effects of this life-giving energy as it is absorbed inside you.
Now let the gentle descent of dew turn into a great downpour of supernal rain. Watch as the heavenly waters pierce the ground all around you and soak deep into the soil. Feel it penetrate into the whole of your being and fill you with the Divine Spirit.
Now rest in the overshadowing presence of the transcendent Divine Mother and the imminent presence of the Divine Daughter.
7. Feel the peace and tranquility that permeate this higher world. Feel the joy and the freedom. Sense its strength and its solidity, all from the Great Mother: stand tall and still and firm.
8. Now let go of all images and rest in the silence; then slowly open up your eyes.

Today, on our Sunwheel, we light the Yellow Candle of Hope in honor of the Holy Daughter, Kore. (Kor-a, which means Maiden.) The Mystery which it represents is the Winter Mystery of the Nativity. Mother’s Night/Daughter’s Day is an old Norse Tradition for whom the day is celebrated in honor of the young Goddess, Sunna; Sol being her mother. (1)

Mother’s Night was also celebrated by the Anglo-Saxons in honor of the Matronae/Matres, the pan-European Triple Mothers. (2) The idea of Mother’s Night has been retained as a tradition, in many parts of European Christianity, but the night has been transferred from Yule Eve to Christmas Eve, as it is now celebrated in honor of the Virgin Mary.

A recent comment from a Devotee:

Congratulations on the addition to your family! I hope mother & child are healthy and happy.

I can hardly contain myself for the posts on Advent & Nativity! It seems so wonderful and exciting to me this year. I’ve already begun putting up decorations, nearly a full week earlier than my family has done in years, and taking slightly larger steps to adding more pieces – such as Advent Candles – into the house this year.

I have seen it mentioned in several places today – the Sun Wheel and the Silver Tree. What are those? Or should I wait until your posts on them?

Dear Rebekah, thank you so much! Grandchildren are truly a joy! I am now blessed with six grandchildren!!! Both mother and son are doing great, thank you. And thank you for your contagious enthusiasm about the upcoming Holy Season!

Within our Ekklesia, we are happy to announce that one of our priestesses, Madria Kathi, will be elevated to ArchMadria during the holy month of Astrea and another member is preparing to become a Madrina (deaconess) after the Winter season!

(Janites have three levels of clergy: 1) Madrina, which means god or guardian mother, for the office of deaconess. This office is symbolic of the Holy Daughter. 2) Madria, which means mother, for the office of priestess, symbolic of the Celestial Mother. And, 3) ArchMadria, for the office of high priestess or bishop, symbolic of the Great Mother.)

Spiritually, we have one of the holiest months of the year ahead of us during which we celebrate the emanation of the Holy Daughter from the Celestial Mother.

Our scriptures use the traditional story of a Divine Birth on the Cosmic level in order to describe the eternal emanation of the Daughter from the Mother. This emanation is similar to the emanation of Sophia from the Barbelo, aka, Higher Sophia and this is also similar to Lower Shekinah emanating from Higher Shekinah.

The Holy Daughter emanates from the Celestial Mother in order to be here, with us. She is immanent, with us and She clothes, covers and protects our spirits with our souls. This is what makes our life here on Earth possible.

There can be no more intimate relationship with Deity than that of the Holy Daughter sharing Her very Soul with us. (This thealogy is taken from authentic teachings.)

And so, this coming feast of Daughter’s Day, the day of Yule, is a source of great joy for Janite Deanists. The Holy Daughter is our North Star of Hope. She separates from the Divine Mother in order to be here, in union with us. It was not the Mother’s Will to allow us to dwell in complete exile and so, She sent Her Holy Daughter to us.

The Daughter is our bridge to the Divine Mother and at the end of our incarnations, we, our spirits and souls, will be assumed, along with the Holy Daughter, into full reunion/communion with Our Divine Mother God, where we will abide with Her in everlasting Bliss. This is what we are celebrating on Daughter’s Day, which some call the Nativity of the Holy Daughter.

During the month of Astrea, we also look forward to the feast of Madria Sofia, Jana of Wisdom, which takes place on 1 Astrea/Nov. 28. Next, on 7 Astrea/Dec. 4, we light our first candle of the Sunwheel, which is the Green candle of Wisdom. This Sacred Month culminates with the lovely celebration of the Star Maiden on 28 Astrea/Dec. 25th. This works well for those who practice a dual Path of both Deanism and Christianity.

(Please note: some of our devotees practice a dual Path. Some are Jews and Christians for whom the Deanic Faith is the “Mother God side of religion”. Others are Pagans or Druids who also incorporate the Deanic Faith, although our belief system is different than that of neo-Paganism. And, of course, for many devotees, the Deanic Faith is their sole religion similar to the Shakti Tradition of Hinduism.)

Now that I have laid the basic thealogical foundation of the upcoming feast days, I will be writing weekly updates on the lighting of the Sunwheel.  For now, I will offer a basic explanation of the Deanic Sunwheel and the Janite Tradition of the Silver Tree.

The Sunwheel, a beautiful tradition which was incorporated into the Deanic Faith by ArchMatrona Georgia Cobb of the Lady of Light Chantry,  is very much like an Advent Wreath (which has pre-Christian origins), except we use different colored candles which represent our main Five Symbols.

An actual Advent Wreath may be used and the fifth candle placed in the center; you may purchase a five candle Advent wreath as shown above,  or you may simply buy five pillar-style candles and place them in a circle and decorate the circle as you please. In the footnote below is an amazing array of five candle advent wreaths that are available as well as examples of home-made wreaths.  (see footnote 1).

Beginning with the first Sunnadi/Sunday on 1 Astrea/Nov. 27th: the Green candle of Wisdom is lit. This is symbolic of Dea Madria or Mother God as the Apple of Wisdom.

The second Sunnadi on 8 Astrea/Dec. 4, we light the Yellow candle of Hope. This is symbolic of Dea Filia or Daughter God as the (North) Star of Hope.

Third Sunnadi on 15 Astrea/Dec. 11: the Violet candle of Faith is lit. This is symbolic of Dea Matrona or Great Mother God as the Fora of Faith.

Fourth Sunnadi on 22 Astrea/Dec.18: we light the Blue candle of Peace. This is symbolic of Dea Filia, Daughter God as the Dove of Peace.

On Yule Eve, 23 Astrea/Dec. 20: we light the Red candle of Joy. This is symbolic of Dea Madria, Mother God, as the Rose of Joy.

These candles not only represent the Five Sacred Symbols, but also the Five Holy Mysteries of our Faith of which the Symbols are, well, symbolic!

As the Apple of Wisdom, the Celestial Mother is the Ground and Matrix of All Being.

As the Star of Hope, the Holy Daughter comes to us as our Soteria (Saviouress in that She is here with us, gives us our souls and guides us back to the Divine Mother).

As the Violet Fora of Faith, the Great Mother is the Primordial Source of the All.

As the Blue Dove of Peace, the Holy Daughter renews all life.

As the Red Rose of Joy, the Celestial Mother is our assumption into the inner Heavenly realm which we call the Real or the Pleroma (as opposed to the outer realm which our Tradition calls Avalon.)

Each week, I will be listing appropriate scriptures to be read after lighting the candle (s), along with a brief devotional prayer. Devotees may also pray in their own words.

Very similar to the use of the Christian Advent wreath, each candle is first lit on a Sunnadi/Sunday and then each night thereafter during dinner time. It is extinguished after dinner. For Janites, Yule Eve, according to certain pre-Christian European Traditions, is Mother’s Night.  Yule, according to the same Tradition, is Daughter’s Day and so you see that the Sunwheel culminates on the night before the Solstice, on Mother’s Night. In the Deanic Faith, the Celestial Mother is known as the Supernal Sun; the Holy Daughter is the Supernal Moon. In our Tradition, Supernal means both Heavenly and Primoridal.

The Silver Tree is in honor of our Creation Story, where it is said that the original Creation was silver. The Silver Tree is also in honor of the Janati as their color is said to have been silver before they emanated from Dea Madria, Mother God, into the Seven Living Streams of Virtue.

Silver is said to contain all the colors of the rainbow. And so, for Janites, Silver is considered to be a sacred color, containing within all the potentialities of not only the Janati, but of Creation, itself.

I use the above Silver Tree that may be obtained from Yankee candle. (2) I tend to keep mine on my altar all year long. Others keep it solely as an Astrean (during the month of Astrea) tradition.

Some devotees actually use a silver Nativity tree and decorate it all in silver moons, suns, stars and fairies. This is my goal, as well. Each year, I hope to obtain more of these decorations until my tree is filled with them. Moons for Daughter God, Suns for Mother God, Stars for Great Mother God and fairies because we honor them along with the Fairie Queen Aine.
