1st Astrea / November 28th: the Feast of Jana Madria Sage

Feast of Jana Madria Sage
1st Astrea / November 28th

Salvation has come to us; from thee is salvation.
Thou art wisdom, thou knowledge; thou art truthfulness.
On account of thee is life; from thee is life.
On account of thee is mind; from thee is mind.
Thou art mind, thou a world of truthfulness,
thou a triple power, thou threefold.

O, Lady Sofia, Jana of Intelligence, Intuition and Wisdom, be with us. May the Pure Stream of your Virtues flow within me, in this world and in all the worlds to come.

Winter is the Season ruled over by one of the Janae of the Four-fold Earth. These govern the four cardinal directions and their corresponding Elements and Seasons and therefore, they are known as the Janae of the four-fold Earth.

Jana Madria Sage is the Guardian of North and Air and Guardian of the corresponding Season of Winter.
See: https://deanic.com/2017/11/28/the-sacred-season-of-winter-is-a-hopeful-and-joyful-season-of-the-cosmic-drama/

And so, today is the Feast of the Jana, Madria Sage. On this, her feast day, time may be spent in quiet prayer, maybe a Janae mantra rosary or contemplation in Her honor. Lady Sage may also be celebrated with the Liturgy (priestesses) or the Rite of Sacrifice (devotees), which may also be celebrated this coming Sunday.

Everyone celebrates the feast days of the Janati differently. Some offer flowers and incense, feast foods and drink. Others incorporate some of Their correspondences into the day in the way they decorate, in the foods they choose or in the colors they wear. Others might incorporate special crafts or rituals, but usually these are reserved for our High Holy Days.

Download a colouring page of Sapientia, (sah-pee-ehn-tee-ah), whose name means “feminine wisdom” in Latin, who is the archetype of wisdom.

So for Madria Sage’s feast day, some devotees might wear the color yellow in Her honor. They might use a yellow tablecloth and place vases of yellow flowers on the home altar or shrine and around the hestia (sacred blessed home).

They might burn the incenses that are sacred to her and decorate with images of owls and other items symbolic of Air such as feathers and bells.

Some Wisdom Goddesses:

Metis, Goddess of Practical Wisdom In Mature Women

Metis (Meh-tis) is a Greek goddess who is the personification of wisdom. Her name means “prudent counsel,”
and it was said that Metis knew more than all the gods. Some sources say Metis was the same as Medusa, who
is an ancient archetype of feminine wisdom.

Athena by deathangelpadma on DeviantArt Copyright 2007-2014

Athene, Athena (as Wisdom)
“According to the Pelasgians (prehistoric peoples inhabiting Mediterranean lands), Athene was born beside the
lake or river Triton, and nurtured by three nymphs. The cult of Athene went back to the Cretan civilization, which
predated that of classical Greece by about 1,500 years. Athens was inhabited even before the Bronze Age
(2000-1000 B.C.). Capital of modern Greece situated in Attica. It was named after the goddess Athene.

Zeus had swallowed his consort, Metis, on learning that she would soon bear a child who would rule the gods.
Metis was renowned for her wisdom. The myth may be a way of saying that when Zeus came to power he
absorbed wisdom (Metis), and from this wisdom came the knowledge from which the arts (Athene) developed.

Athene appears in innumerable myths, but none better displays her unique intellectual qualities than her role in
the Odyssey as the constant friend and adviser of the clever and imaginative Odysseus.”

Greek and Roman Mythology A to Z by Kathleen N. Daly, Marian Rengel

“She would also come to be known as the goddess of wisdom as philosophy became applied to cult in the later fifth century. She remained the patroness of weaving especially and other crafts (Athena Ergane) and the more
disciplined side of war, where she led the battle (Athena Promachos). She is attended by an owl. In classical myth she never had a consort or lover, and thus was often known as Athena Parthenos (“Athena the virgin”), hence her most famous temple, the Parthenon, on the Acropolis in Athens.”

Realm of the Fire Queen by Barrington Coleby

The name Hokmah comes from an Egyptian goddess called Heq-ma’a, or Hek-ma’at – a  goddess of – you guessed it – wisdom and deep mysteries.

Heq-ma’a is originally mentioned in the Egyptian Book of the Dead, a scripture which predates the entire Bible by centuries.
Heq-ma’a’s name loosely translates as “Underworld Mother of Wisdom, Law, and Words of Power.” Heq is translated as “intelligence,” or “knowledge”. From heq we get the word “hex” meaning magic words of power.

Heq-ma’a’s name became Hokmah.  And words like Hagia (holy) and hag (wisewoman, holy woman) come from the heq part of her name. She evidently scared the heck out of the church authorities because they demonized her.

The word Hag now has a negative connotation and is associated with witch. One of the oldest Greek Goddesses, Hecate, also gets her name directly from this Egyptian goddess.

The illustration is Sophia as Hokmah, that supposedly masculine sphere on the Tree of Life.
She is obviously female and is adeptly wielding the fires of creation.  Have you noticed since she’s been on the screen she’s been looking you in the eye, as if to say, I’m trying to tell you something, he that hath an eye let him see?

Well, her secret message is her name. See how the balls in her hands look like spheres on the Tree of Life? They are.

Wisdom = Sophia
Glory = Shekinah

She’s holding them in the positions of her two names, Wisdom and Glory, Sophia and Shekinah.
We just saw that her Egyptian name means Underworld Mother of Wisdom.
See how she is rooted in the underworld, coming up from a grave?
Volcanic fires also, come-up-from-the-depths.
Earth science has proven volcanoes go hand in hand with planetary formation.
Sophia is said to have created the world.

Chokmah (pronounced hok-mah) is the second stage in the process of manifestation, and the first actual “manifestation” of energy itself.

Hebrew Hokmah, Chockmah, Chokhmah, Khokhmah (hok-mah)
“Her separateness was clear in the eleventh century CE, when the Spanish Arab scholar Ibn Hazm noted she had the powers of a goddess. The earliest creation of YHWH, Hokmah was also his favourite. Hokmah cast her shadow on the primeval waters stilling them. Hokmah gave consciousness to humankind. By the time of Hellenistic Judaism (first century BCE), Hokmah appeared as a figure in her own right. She became more and more clearly personified, even splitting into positive (“wisdom”) and negative (“folly”) aspects.”

Hebrew Chokhmah
The “wisdom” of Chokhmah also implies the ability to look deeply at some aspect of reality and abstract its conceptual essence till one succeeds in uncovering its underlying axiomatic truth. These seeds of truth can then be conveyed to the companion power of Binah for the sake of intellectual analysis and development.
Chokhmah is the primary (“beginning”) force in the creative process, Creativity, as it is said: “You have made them all with Chokhmah.” (Psalms 104:24) The first word of the Torah in Genesis, Breishit means “In the beginning (God created the heavens and the earth)”, is translated (Targum Yonatan) as “With Chokhmah (God created…).
The word Chokhmah itself may be broken into two words — koach (“potential”) and ma (“what is”). Thus,
Chokhmah means “the potential of what is”, or, “the potential to be.”
In the soul, Chokhmah is associated with the power of intuitive insight.”

Sarasvati

Saraswati (Saara-swa-ti) (as Learning/Wisdom)
“It is believed that goddess Saraswati endows human beings with the powers of speech, wisdom and learning.
She has four hands representing four aspects of human personality in learning: mind, intellect, alertness and ego.
In visual representations, she has sacred scriptures in one hand and a lotus–the symbol of true knowledge–in the opposite hand.
Learned and the erudite individuals attach great importance to the worship of goddess Saraswati as a representation of knowledge and wisdom. They believe that only Saraswati can grant them moksha– the final liberation of the soul.”

Sapientia (sah-pee-ehn-tee-ah), whose name means “feminine wisdom” in Latin, is the archetype of wisdom.
Sapientia has been termed the “goddess of the Bible” by some scholars, indicating the presence of the Divine Feminine in monotheism. She was ackowledged up until medieval times but has been forgotten with the passage of time. In fact, she thrived as a hidden goddess of philosophical inquiry between the fifth and fifteenth centuries at a time when the sacred feminine was considered heresy.

Mystics spoke of her as dwelling in the heart of God and, in some cases, saw her as bringing all creation into being. She embododied the World Soul, or the collective of humanity, and the mystical union with the Divine sought by sages and spiritual pilgrims.”
Goddesses for Every Day: Exploring the Wisdom and Power of the Divine Feminine around the World by Julie Loar, New World Library, 2010

A 5th century beautiful series of antiphons are still chanted as part of Advent liturgy, including:
O Sapientia, quae ex ore Altissimi prodiisti, attingens a fine usque ad finem fortiter, suaviterque disponens omnia: veni ad docendum nos viam prudentiae.

“O Wisdom, who came from the mouth of the Most High,
reaching from end to end and ordering all things mightily and sweetly,
Come, and teach us the way of prudence.

Foods for the feast meal might tend to be airy and light and well, yellow such as yellow vegetables and jello salads. Light and airy (for the Element of Air over which She rules) foods and beverages such as angel food cake, salads, champagne, white wine or white grape juice, light soups, rice, white beans, apples, pears might be an important part of the feast. All these ideas make the feast meal festive and fun.

Though our days can be busy and hectic, it’s nice to take a moment, perhaps in the morning, to reflect about which of Her Virtues we wish to emulate and strengthen within ourselves on Her feast day and Her weekly day
Stelladi / Star day / Wednesday.

Sometimes, I choose a Virtue that I know I’m going to need that day. I call on Her help with the Virtue of Wisdom whenever I must make an important decision about the Janite Tradition or when writing articles or counseling someone in need.

I am slowly learning to pay closer attention to my intuition. For example, so often, as I was leaving the house, I would see something and my inner voice was telling me I should take it with me, but my logical side would dismiss it as not being necessary. And, nine times out of ten, it ended up that I needed the item.

When I started my new job, I prayed for the Virtue of Intelligence to see me through. This is helpful when studying for and taking tests or in a zillion other areas. There are two types of Intelligence, the IQ and the EQ.
EQ is Emotional Intelligence and is just as important as the Intelligence Quotient.

There are so many areas where Madria Sage may help us. I love consciously surrounding myself with the Presence of the Janae during my Aurora Rite each morning. I feel like they are with me all day when I do this.
And when I try to connect in a special way with the Jana of the day, I find I come to experience Them and know Them on an intimate, soul level.

O, Madria Sage, we thank You for this day and for all Your blessings and benefits. Be with us.

May Our Lady bless you, Blessed is She.

Yesterday, in Part I of FAQ/Soul/Spirit,  I explained some of the reasons why the Janite Order of Priestesses has chosen the Divine Sophia (and, in part, the Holy Shekinah) as Images/Forms for the Most Pure Daughter rather than the goddess Inanna. Today, we will also show that in our scriptures and liturgy, Persephone was also used as an Image/Form of the Holy Daughter. In exploring the further Deanic significance of the Divine Name, Kore, a name for Persephone before She was married to Hades, it will be demonstrated that there is a tie between Sophia as Form/Image of the Daughter and the Divine Maid.

It is truly important to have a fundamental understanding of Sophia in order to understand The Holy Daughter, Kore, as the Holy Soul. There is so much to say about Sophia, if we strip away the Patriarchal elements, but even Patriarchy could not conceal the entire truth about Her!

She has appeared, in great visions, to Russian and Russian Orthodox philosophers who identified Her as Wisdom, the Lady Wisdom.

xindian-triple-goddess-jpg-pagespeed-ic-lkf2hhnywj

Outside of Shaktism, which is one of the four main Traditions of Hinduism and whose worship is centered upon the Divine Feminine Trinity as Supreme, only Sophia/Shekinah is credited with all of the following (and so much more): She is called the Primordial Light of Creation and the Cosmic Womb. She is said to have created the Cosmos. “She is the formatrix of heaven and earth.” She is placed over the Seven Planetary Powers; She is the Mother of the Seven HousesShe is both Mother and Daughter (Barbelo/Sophia, Higher/Lower Sophia, Higher/Lower Shekinah, Mother Sige and Daughter Sophia) and She is also Trinity: Mother, Daughter and Holy Soul. She is said to be the Matrix and the Ground of All Being. (Yes, this latter is said of Sophia/Shekinah.) In modern times She is known as the ‘Goddess of Re-Birth’.

We must always remember that when Wisdom is personified in the bible, the word Wisdom translates into the Greek, Sophia. (The Septuagint was a Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures. The Latin for Wisdom is Sapientia.) We must also keep in mind that some of the Hebrew Scriptures have teachings that were adapted from the Zoroastrians and the Egyptians. The NT also contains both Egyptian and Jewish teachings. And, most people are aware that much of Christianity incorporated elements from Classical and Celtic Paganism. In other words, every religion incorporates from that which preceded them. That is why there is a Sacred Thread, a Core Truth, that runs through all religions.

Furthermore, as the Perfect Image/Form of the Holy Daughter,  Sophia is said to be the Daughter of Light. She is Wisdom and the Daughter of Wisdom.  In Proverbs, She offers us the Wine She has mixed and the Bread She has made and so She is acting as High Priestess. She descended through the Seven Realms and is said to sustain all of Creation. She takes on rarefied Form. She is said to be of God-Nature. She is said to be the Divine Maid. She is said to sustain all of Creation. She is said to be the Divine Spark within us and that She suffered through a painful Descent through the Seven Realms in order to remain with us. From Her, we receive our souls. She is said to be the World Soul or the Holy Soul.

There is so, so much more to be said of the Divine Sophia/Shekinah, Who else, in our Age, is more Perfect as the Image and Form of the Most Pure Holy Daughter?

What separates us from modern neo-Paganism, though we have more of a Pagan culture, is that we understand the Divine Feminine Trinity to be God, not a goddess. In our era, there is a difference between the two. And, this is what the Deanic Faith has always taught: Dea is God. She is our Mother God.

In returning to Sophia, we have to remember that we have every right to divorce Sophia from Patriarchal demotion and to restore Her to Her True place, just as our fore-mothers in the Faith did with their Forms and Images of Dea.

The Deanic Faith worships the Divine Feminine as being God in Her Own right. She is not God because She is the Spouse of the Father, She is God because She is Primary, She is Source, She is Supreme, She is the Ground of All Being, She is Primordial and She is of God-Nature. She is God because She is God. Pure and Simple.

But, there is one more upon whom the Holy Daughter is modeled in our Faith from whence the Janites take the Name, Kore.

In addition to the goddess, Inanna, the Mythos and the original Madrian liturgy also modeled the Holy Daughter on Persephone, who, before being forced into marriage by Hades, was known as Kore, which was the Greek for Maid or Maiden. The title of Her Mythos in our scriptures is the Mythos of the Divine Maid, meaning in translation of the word, maid: the Mythos of the Divine Kore. Some of the Persephonian (so to speak) verses in Her Mythos are to be found in the Communion Rite of both the original Madrian and in the Janite liturgy.

This is why the JOP has chosen the name Kore for the Holy Daughter. It was felt that it was the most fitting Name for the Most Pure Daughter as She is the Divine Maid.

(As an aside: The beginning of the following article is interesting and shows that the use of the term, Mistress in our scriptures is right and proper and is equated with Persephone: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potnia.)

Today, I will begin to explain the Holy Daughter as the Holy Soul and we must always keep in mind that Sophia is ultimately pre-Christian and Her worship is pan-religious. One does not have to be Christian in order to worship Her. She is also believed, by many to be Isis (Isis-Sophia.)

Sophia-Goddess-of-Wisdom-with-chalice (Sophia, Goddess of Wisdom with Chalice.)

We (the Janite Order) probably do not understand the Holy Daughter to be a sacrificial saviouress in the same manner as the scriptures might seem to indicate. Nor is She a savior in the sense that Christians consider Jesus to be. We are not saved from a Primordial fault or from a type of original sin, or of a will-full turning away from the Holy Mother. (Please see the long form of the Creed which was discovered in the original liturgy. It may be found under our Prayers and Rites section of the menu.) The Catechism describes this as an evil act, on our part. We reject this thealogy and that part of the Catechism has been removed.

There has been enough suffering of females over the last 2-3,000 years, as a result of blaming a first female for the Fall of humankind. When the Gnostic Christians tried to blame Sophia for creating the demi-urge, it was a re-blaming of the Female all over again, just like they blamed the Mother of all the Living, Eve, for ‘original sin’ and for causing the ‘male to sin’. How different the notion of the ‘Fallen Sophia” is than this Gnostic text: Sophia was born from the Primordial Female Power, Sige (or Silence, the Gnostic Goddess Sige) and that She was God’s Mother, ‘the Great revered Virgin in Whom the Father was concealed from the beginning.’

The JOP categorically rejects any notion of original sin no matter under what mythos it is couched or how it is ultimately explained. And we further reject any Patriarchal idea of a Fallen Sophia Who needed a male savior.

Thankfully, in our Age, many are discarding the outdated notion of the Fallen Sophia. Many understand Her to be Mother/Daughter and Holy Soul; the Christian Holy Spirit; or that She incarnated as Jesus or Mary Magdalene, or  She is understood as the Divine Goddess of Wisdom. There is a long-standing Tradition in Russian Orthodoxy that Mary of Nazareth was the incarnation of Sophia. And, yet, many others see Her as we do, in Her Primary/Primordial Form of being Divine in Her Own Right.

How does all of this relate to the Holy Daughter as Soul and our souls?

We, our True Selves, chose to come here in order to learn life and soul lessons that we could not learn as pure spirits. As the long form of the Madrian Creed indicates, we had a desire to learn what lay outside of Perfection. Our Divine Mother, through Her Sovereign Will, honored our sovereign will and so created manifested reality for us. The problem is, we forget why we are here. We forget who we really are. We have forgotten our True Home and so, as in the Hymn of the Pearl, we must remember and find our way back Home. We must also evolve our souls into perfect love so that we may eternally abide in Perfect Love.

While our spirits are created from the Breath of the Holy Mother, it is the Most Pure Daughter Who gives us our souls.

Sophia is therefore the highest ruler over the visible universe, and at the same time, the Mediatrix between the upper and the lower realms. She shapes this mundane universe after the heavenly prototypes, and forms the seven star-circles with their Archons (we believe Janati) under whose dominion are placed, according to the astrological conceptions of antiquity, the fates of all earthly things, and more especially of humanity. She is “the Mother” or “the Mother of the living.” (Epiph. Haer. 26, 10). As coming from above, She is Herself of pneumatic essence, the mētēr phōteinē (Epiph. 40, 2) or the anō dynamis (Epiph. 39, 2) from which all pneumatic souls draw their origin. (Wiki)

She is also often crowned with Seven Stars. She is known to have Seven Spirits, Seven Faces and Seven Pillars. (Wisdom 9-1. Wisdom means Sophia.) She is known as the Mother of the Seven Houses.

Wisdom hath builded her house, She hath hewn out her seven pillars:

These seven pillars being interpreted of the planetary heavens.

The Seven Planetary Powers were placed under Her.

There is so much more we could speak about, here, but let us move on to Sophia/Shekinah as the Holy Soul.
